I love living in San Diego, I love the ocean, living in a large city, great weather, all the culture and all.
Only place I would ever consider living would be New York City.

They have barely scratched the surface on the reasons why they are leaving. Taxes, energy costs, yes. They didn't mention the workers compensation rates which are exhorbitant in California. They didn't mention the number of regulatory agencies. In my business we are 'regulated' by dozens of agencies, sometimes redundant - i.e. city, county and state all doing the same 'regulating'. Someone probably monitors what they do with all their laquer and wood shavings. They probably have to pay permit fees for some of their equipment (we pay a fee of $300-900 a year per piece of equipment we use in our facility.. and we have about 22 such 'feeable' pieces of equipment). This kind of stuff is just too much. We have to pay a fee to permit us to do our work!
It won't be long until our company moves too, I'm sure. Just the permit fees could pay my home mortgage. I know the boss probably realizes it too.

I think what the critics are worrying about is that California's economy is becoming somewhat like a plantation: High-wage, white-collar jobs at the top; and low-wage, mostly immigrant labor to take care of the needs of white-collar residents.

Funny thing is that i know a guy that worked for Nasco and it was the worst job ever. Talking about applying oneself... that's why he had to quit, no one would!
What i was talking more about was the fact that yes, a single self-sufficiant one like yourself could survive fine in the city, but what about families? It's near impossible to start a family in the san Diego area. That's why people are buying homes up in Temecula, Murrietta, and Las Vegas. And that's just ridiculous.
