It should have been done a decade before 9/11.

Maybe we wouldn't have had a 9/11 if we had gotten our affairs in order sooner.

I am not against citizens being required to learn English - I believe that is a current requirement - someone asked me where I draw the line and C-SPAN was not it.

I prefer the status quo.
Anmesty is permanent. Sealing the border is a promise that will not be kept.

"As for another "Civil War", I think that is what this compromise legislation is seeking to head off."

And let me guess whose side you'll be on...

People here for less than 2 years have to leave. That's a good first step.

A provision which is totally unenforceable.

Bingo.

Bingo with bells on.

"Hey, Pancho, you know that green card you made me, the one that says I've been here for a year? Well, I need some other papers. Can you make it so that I've been here five years? Great! Gracias!"

My wife told me that the clerk at the check-cashing station at the grocery store downtown told her that they demand the green card from every "immigrant" before cashing their check from the local bigtime ag employer. Guess what? They all have green cards! Guess what else? All the green cards have the same ID number printed on them!

Golly, who woulda guessed it? Criminals, LYING????

Here's what we're gonna get out of this "deal": We are going to get two more New York City's worth of "citzens".

Well, let me clarify. That's not quite accurate. NYC proper only has, what, seven million residents? I'm talking about the "greater NYC area", which has about ten million.

That's what we're gonna get -- twenty million new "citizens".

That's the "for starters" part of this clstrfk. We'll also get their relatives, which will maybe double that number -- and then, we'll still have millions more "guests" hustling over the "border" (scare-quotes because it's only a "line on a map", not a REAL border).

We have just been raped.

Kiss your country goodbye. And learn Spanish!

PS: Any Mexican with an IQ over 80 will be ready to "document" that he's been here over five years. Bet on it.

Every legal immigrant I know feels betrayed by the U.S. government on this one.

And, my FRiend, that is exactly what has happened to you, and to them.

This 'compromise' sounds like a really hard nosed bill on immigration.

As I understand it, the Senate is demanding AT LEAST two full years of lawbreaking to qualify for the coveted Citizenship award. None of this "I just started breaking the law a few months ago" stuff. Nope. They've put their foot down. Show at least two years of active lawbreaking or you will have to wait in line like those poor suckers who are actually following the law and applying for citizenship through legal means.

Have I got it right? Thank God for the conservatives in the House. "Help me Obi Wan Sensenbrenner, you're our only hope..."

No problem - I thought you were just going to leave me alone since you think I don't "get it" anyways - the person asked if I was "fluent in English", not "what do you think?". Thanks for trying at least.

"Amnesty, surrounded by bureaucracy" = This Senate Compromise on Immigration. - J.D. Hayworth

That's certainly true, as well as a complete sell-out of The United States of America. Both Republicans and Democrats have lost any right to represent me, as far as I am concerned.

All of you are complaining here. Don't you realize that all the protest marches that the illegal immigrants and their supporters did the last couple of weeks has spoke volumes. First, there were no counter anti-illegal immigrant marches. You mistakently thought calling, writing and emailing your senators would be enough. It isn't. Remember America is watching. When they don't see Americans marching against illegal immigration, a lot of people think that it's not that big a problem for most Americans. We need to start marching and I mean NOW. A visual memory of millions of Americans marching against illegal immigration speaks volumes both visually and figuratively. If you want illegal immigration to stop, if you want border security and you want no amnesty, call your friends, family and anyone you know that feels as you do and get those protests out there on the street. Let yourself be seen as well as heard. You have got to move fast.

Does anyone know how it will be determined who has been in US for 1 year, 5 years, 10 years....???

Will it be 'take my word, i've been here 10 years. no need to return to country of origin, just make me a citizen..'??

They will be required to provide "the fake documents that Americans won't..."

What a farce.

I'd ask "how stupid do they think we are", but the fact that they just ramrodded this sucker into place pretty much answers that question. They think we're pretty damn stupid!

And if we keep electing them into office next time around, they'll KNOW we're that stupid!

"You see, any promise or even hint of amnesty actually brings more illegals across the border in a mad rush"

You got that right, and dennisw's History of U.S. Amnesties bears that out.
