You're right about ipod jogger/hearing persons or even plain old radio joggers wearing headphones. Every year or so someone doing just that gets hit by a train. You wonder why they don't feel vibrations underfoot and turn around, but by then it's probably too late.

Mine find a balance in the middle somewhere and balance the noise level. Each hearing aid of mine has the computing power of at least 2.1 GHz desktop computer, and they have the computing power to adjust the volume level to slight variations depending on the volume level of the surroundings or noise and the persistance of such noise, like lawnmowers, vacuum cleaner, etc.

There's an air blast and suction created by a fast train that can knock you down or possibly even pull you into the train. You can also be struck by something loose hanging from one of the cars. You don't have to be on the tracks, just close to them to be in danger.
Even a hearing person facing away from a train can be very surprised at how close a train can get before you hear it. A lot of the noise you associate with a train is radiating alongside of it, not travelling ahead of it. A deaf person facing away from a fast train might not know it's coming.
What part of the ear did the virus damage?
