You asked -- "What new quid pro quo?"
Well, news is coming out now that the UAE will sell its interests to an American entity.
So, the way it's gone was -- at first Bush tried the 45-day delay deal. He convinced the UAE to present that on its own side. They did. But, that only gave time for the crazy Democrats to gather forces and hollar louder. And now they want to shut it totally down (by a bill in Congress).
Bush's next move was to get the UAE to say that they would sell their interests (as far as I gather now) to an American interest. I'll bet the "American interest" has a "UAE" portion too.
Thus, this is the new "quid pro quo" to preserve all the previous ones. Who knows what was promised behind the scenes. I guess we'll find out in a few months or few years.
In any case, the deal will go through now.

his followers were forced to start attacking conservatives who oppose illegal immigration and who oppose the ports deal as racists.I have to correct myself. They weren't forced to play the race card, but once it came out they took to it like fish to water.

If this was over, Boeing would be looking at an order cancellation, not a threat..
The UAE would have just implemented their sanctions for the US backing out of supporting an essentially 'done deal' and the willingness of the Congress to squelch it without the normal 45 day review period.
Bush will veto the measure, to save our relationship with the UAE, and to give some of the dipsh!ts on the Hill time for their staffers to find a map.
Otherwise, I expect I can buy a new Van, 'cause the next few years are going to see some really high oil prices when Iran makes its move, and I'll be assured steady work right here at home.

Of course, in this post-nationalist era, the value of an American life doesn't mean much anymore
Dearest Queen, you have no idea how much I fear that this is truly the case.
I know that MY future is not being looked after, nor is my life and care for it. Because of the crap with the illegals here, I can't even get decent medical insurance anymore, and I make over 75k/year. Actually, MY EMPLOYER can't even get us decent insurance.... because it's all been so screwed over in this state by the migrant population. Jeez, I'm trying to be so PC, and I just HATE it.
I know I am not a racist, though my father was a card-carrying (David Duke even) KKK member. He changed after the military and taught me the power of humanity, not skin color. And funny, some stupid humans never change. But we have the ability. And if looking out for American interests and American agenda makes me a Xenophobe, I'll go put on my belly dancer gear and start a show babeh. Complete with Iraqi folk music. :D
To hell with what *they* say.... we shouldn't have to *ask* people to enforce laws. They aren't exactly optional, as a cop would tell you if you got pulled over today. :)

Perhaps you are right. But, we have warships visiting there, we have UAE Special Forces working with us in Afghanistan. They are trying to transform their country, sounds like me. Our military seems to trust them. Why shouldn't we work with them?
I mean, we can just say screw them all forever, and I understand that. But what if we could really help one of them to change?

You can try to paint it what ever color you like, but in the end the isolationist ideals wreak havoc to any country that employs these policies.
now lets exchange the word "isolationist" to "nationalist"
Let's just all go so global that the USA is owned by every country in the world. Agenda 21 anyone?

Oh, like telling people in the ME that we completely fail to distinguish between the ones that help us out and the ones who don't. That won't help out our security at any time in the future. That's $billions in investment capital that could buy a whole heck of a lot of nuclear reactor fuel.

Part of the Bush legacy will be the fact that in order to come to his defense, his followers were forced to start attacking conservatives who oppose illegal immigration and who oppose the ports deal as racists. I think that from this point forward we will see them use the race card whenever possible. It's a sleazy leftist tactic, but hey-----it often works. Anything to shut down the dialogue and maintain their power. After reading these threads for the last couple of weeks, I guess I'm in the "red-necked, hicksville, far right-wing, xenophobic" camp for opposing open borders. Who would have known such accusations would come from so-called conservatives?
To: Junior_G
When you can't pound the facts, pound the table.
That seems to be the mantra of the unwavering Bush acolytes.

I won't pardon you, Howlin, I've seen you in action, and I know what you're about.
And since when being on a forum somewhere for seven years make someone more knowledgable? You don't KNOW me, and don't pretend you do. You don't know anything about me or my background. That doesn't make you any better than me - OR ANYONE ELSE. Ego much?
If there isn't meaningful immigration work done, we're going to have a nightmare on our hands the likes this country hasn't seen since the 30s. And we know it. And those who do know it are pushing for it. May not happen today... it *will* happen in the next 2-3 years.

And there will be NO meaningful immigration legislation -- why, you ask? Because the public doesn't want it.
Got any sources to back that up? Or do you really mean that big business and the corrupt Mexican elite don't want it?

The Dems may be piling on because they're political opportunists, ...In case you missed it; it was the Dems (Schumer) who started this.

I hate to break this to you, but the UAE has already been pretty useful to the Iranian nuclear program.
They don't need any incentive from us to continue to help them.

It's not my fault your own posts make you easy to spot.I do oppose illegal immigration; and I do think this ports deal was a tremendously stupid idea, though people did stand to make money off of it.
And you calling me a racist for those opinions reveals far more about you than it does me.
To: saminfl
Well they need a few laughs to brighten up their dismal life. Unfortunately the chances of a GOP disaster in the fall has escalated tremendously because of this craven cowardice.
To: Solson
It's his same closet-racism nationalistic tendencies that are being exhibited by the very people actively opposing the port deal. The folks that helped create the extreme reaction to this deal are the same folks hoping the US starts gunning down Mexicans on the border and going house to house doing mass arrests of illegals.
Lets just get rid of nations, and the US, right? Oh wait, we need to keep some part of it so all those illegal aliens will have jobs and money to send back to their countries of origin. And that tax money is pretty handy to use to "reinvent" the American government so they will put the welfare of a foreign country before the welfare of their own people. That tax money is also great to send out of the country so that America's wealth can be more equitably distributed. So we will have to keep some of it, but don't lets keep any part that makes America unique AND FREE, or anything Americans want defend.
