"Listening to latest recap on Fox about the perps (two "aspiring actors", "satanist") reminds me of the amoral characters in Hitchcock's Rope, committing a crime to see if they can get away with it."
Yeah, something like that. These young men are fairly typical of well-off, privileged kids who think the world owes them something and that they can do no wrong. I think we've all knows people like that. It's just that this trio really picked the wrong targets for their stupidity.
Big surprise waiting for them down the road. Folks in Alabama take their church-going seriously. There will be little sympathy for these creeps.
I swore off watching CourtTV years ago, and usually avoid the True Crime threads on FR just because they get so heated, but I am going to make an exception and follow the hell out of this one. Just wait until their emails and private messages become public!
Besides, I'm dying to find out how the three little sociopaths got together in the first place.

That one's easy. They all went to the same small college. Two of them were theater geeks.
Too easy. You haven't explained how they made the jump from theatre buddies to partners in crime, and what kept drawing back the one who transferred out (Cloyd).
Little sympathy? State prosecutors seem to have bought the claim that it was "joke" (and nothing more) hook, line, and sinker.

Well, the media seems to have done that, to a certain extent. It's early days yet. At this point, with the idiots caught, I'll just be watching to see what happens. We've all just about talked this to death. It'll all come out...in time.
I should say now that I was involved in theatre all through high school, and minored in it at college. And I went to a large college first and then transferred to a small one (an art school, smaller than this one), so I do understand some of the interpersonal dynamics.
Believe me, this has not been explained AT ALL to my satisfaction.
Using the email you listed for Matthew Cloyd, I found these two pages...

On the wilohmsford.deviantart.com one, he has a journal, where he lists three things he likes most about himself. #3? His moral values.
Well???
