I don't understand the Prohibition comment - as Prohibition dealt with banning alcohol, not enforcing laws against illegal possession by minors, or in this case, illegal alien activity in the United States.

Get real. We have to cut off the employment opportunities for these illegals. It's the only way its going to work. And the only way we're going to do that is to arrest some folks, try them, and give them some big fines or jail time.

A lot of people call illegals criminals, but I don't really agree. If you're a poor Mexican guy looking across the border, it must be abundantly clear to you that the gringos do not take their own immigration laws seriously. Americans are almost never prosecuted for hiring illegals, even by the hundreds. The worst that happens to an illegal who gets caught is that he gets shipped back across the border.

So, if we don't seem to take our own immigration laws seriously, why should they?

Who in their right mind would pay 10% or more to transfer money if it wasn't an emergency.

apparently quite a few judging by the number of check cashing places all over any metro area that charge that much and more just to cash a check. do this in conjunction with enforcing the border and we may be on to something.

I don't understand the Prohibition comment - as Prohibition dealt with banning alcohol, not enforcing laws against illegal possession by minors, or in this case, illegal alien activity in the United States.

Prohibition attempted to ban a market in certain goods, even though there was a significant percentage of the population that wanted to keep buying and selling goods in that market.

So, capitalism being what it is, a certain group (organized crime) decided to step in and keep the market going. People could still buy alcohol, but now the money ended up in the pocket of Al Capone, rather than Jack Daniels.

If the government tries to ban money wires by illegals, illegals will still end up wiring money. It's just that the modern version of Al Capone will end up taking a few percent of each such wire.

But as an illegal alien you aren't supposed to be here in the first place. This isn't like the availability of a product for legal citizens (alcohol). This is about restricting the wiring of money by illegal aliens to foreign nations. Should we change the laws and not crack down on terrorists who try to wire money to one another? We go after those funds transfers, but by your logic we could say that those who seek to go around the law will do so anyways. That just seems like a defeatist attitude to me?

Or we could just annex Mexico

That idea has much to recommend it.

During prohibition, alcohol wasn't supposed to be in the country, either. But there was a market for alcohol, just as there is a market for illegal labor.

My bigger point is that measures like this are aimed at hurting the supply of illegals. But we'll never fix the problem unless we reduce the demand for illegal labor. As long as the demand for something exists, there will always be a supply.

Of course the real source of the problem is our government intentionally had lax border enforcement for years to provide that cheap labor.

require anyone wiring money to Mexico to provide identification to financial institutions or wire-transfer operators to prove citizenship.

Einie, Meanie, Minie, Moe...Which fake ID will they show?

Yeah, sounds like a great plan.

Just think, we could use police decoys to nail those clerks, and open another job for illegals.

Illegals are fine with anybody that thinks they can get their hands on some of the money involved.

this would be foolish. right now the FEDS work closely with Western Union to "trace" funds. very helpful in getting to terrorists. if we make this illegal - the vast majority of people will find a way to send money home - illegally

All this time I thought only dictatorships imposed currency controls -- inbound and outbound -- of this nature.

Guess I'd better change my thinking and get with the times.

Sure would be a big tax base

Bring in a lot of E. Europeans give them land grants and business loans. Give Mexico a taste of their own medicine.

Another bandaid...

This is an idea that's long overdue. If you're not an illegal alien you have nothing to worry about.

The bottom line is that illegals aren't spending the money here. This just shows that they don't give a rip about assimilating in the U.S. - nope, it's all about supporting their esseys

back home.

Tax the H out of them, I say...

You produce your drivers license, VISA, passport, etc... just like you have to have ID to cash a check at a bank

Every one of the 9/11 hijackers had 6 drivers licenses each from 6 different states With different names addresses and social security numbers on them all.Hell when i was just about to turn 19 i had a drivers license from a state i hadnt been to and still havent to this day that said i was 21 years old and could buy all the booze I wanted from any liquor store I went to.

We have all the laws we need to stop illegal immigration. For example, it is illegal to hire illegal immigrants. Suppose we start prosecuting a few people in each county in the states that have a heavy illegal population. Let's start with the city councilman and his gardener or housekeeper. A little federal charge against him would send a message, doncha think?

I like what your saying but you gotta remember one thing. The guy that authorizes federal prosecutions is Alberto Gonfoxles who in his younger days was a member of laraza the mexican equivalent of the kkk he will never sign off on it in a million years
