OMalley named cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI By Associated Press Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - Updated: 06:32 AM EST
E-mail article View text version View most popular Pope Benedict XVI named 15 new cardinals today, including prelates from Boston, Hong Kong, and Krakow, Poland, adding his first installment to the elite group of churchmen who will elect his successor.
Benedict read aloud the names during his weekly general audience and said they would be elevated during a ceremony at the Vatican on March 24.
Among those chosen to receive the red hat that the so-called princes of the church wear, Benedict also named the archbishops of Caracas, Venezuela, Seoul, Korea and Manilla, Philippines. He also said his successor at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop William Levada, would be made a cardinal, the second American among the new names.
Twelve of the 15 men are under the age of 80, and thus eligible to vote in a conclave to select Benedicts successor.

Is His Holiness planning on dying soon? If not then who knows how old these 12 will be when the next conclave comes around?
Chortle! Probably the writer is projecting his hopes. Personally, I hope Pope Ben lives to 110 and zots them all into oblivion ...
The archbishop of Caracas. Take that Hugo Chavez.

Scared me at first. I thought they meant Mayor Martin O'Malley of Baltimore! ;)
He sounds like the kind of cardinal the church needs. I like this pope.

Once again the Pope is Catholic.
So I've heard :-). It must be difficult for the Archbishop, not to mention the genuinely Catholic residents.
Same thought...I figured it would be a scrappleface or onion article.
He seems like a good choice. I just wish he'd hammer our local heretics a bit more.
On the bright side, the Immaculate Conception Church in Malden will have a Charter Night for our Knights of Columbus which started with 40 Knights. On the down side, there was an attempt to burn down our historic Convent a week ago after three break-ins in a four hour time frame.
He's not looking well, seamole. We really need to pray for him. He's got a lot from the Generation of Dissent in that archdiocese.
I'm hoping that Cardinal O'Malley will now have the authority to call our two "Catholic" Senators (Kennedy and Kerry) on their hypocritical positions on abortion and same-sex marriage. They've gotten a free pass from the Church for too long.
I hope so as well.
Think they'll be attending the ceremony?
If it's televised, certainly. They're both pretty bold about their public hypocrisy. However, they might not be very happy about this because they don't have influence over O'Malley like they did with Law. Law was slime. O'Malley is a genuinely good man in a very difficult position.
