It was July when we were there. And hot metal has a way of evaporating things.

About 25 years ago, I took my family to see the Normandy graveyards; my wife, my two small sons, and I all had tears streaming down our cheeks. Then we went to this museum, where we were hustled along by a French-only tour guide and prohibited from lagging behind to study the exhibits. They obviously didn't welcome Americans, and it left a very bad taste in our mouths.

Really, if you ever get the chance, do it.
The French outside of the cities are really nice, the beer is good, food is excellent. Remember, we have an investment in the place.

"The museum’s brochure talks in pacifist tones of the need to “combat the violence around us . . . Peace begins at home, in the office, with our neighbours.”

Just whom do the French think liberated them from Nazi occupation of their "homes, "offices," and "neighborhoods" -- mannequins??

Not surprising to this Normandy veteran--this place has been riddled with corruption, graft, theft, you name it, since it was started by the Battle of Normandy Foundation years ago--I know whereof I speak since I was a charter member and sent funds to help pay for the 'peace garden', etc.--the whole place has been a big disappointment to many who fought during WW2 so it is no surprise (considering the political climate in Europe today)--most of the money to do the setup 'disappeared' years ago while Anthony Stout, Pres.was in charge---plenty of WW2 vets and others were given the 'shaft' by the smart guys who 'blew the dough?'--we really thought we could leave a remembrance for school kids and tourists to understand the horrific losses incurred in those days and fact that "freedom is never free"---where there is money, there always is a bunch of thieves

I have one uncle buried in Normandy, another at Bastogne.

Every time I hear something like your comment, I think more about bringing them home.

As much as I am disappointed with the official French attitude today, we should all realize the Normandy landings and freeing of France was just a 'means to and end', the winning of WW2 in Europe and overthrow of Hitler's Germany--if there had been an easier or better way to do it, I believe the allied war planners would have used it, whether France was freed or not prior to the wars end. France has been taken over so many times during history they have an attitude of "Thanks, now when are you going home?"---just maybe we would think the same way if the USA had experienced the same things??

In the same theme, I wonder how long it will be before the ACLU demands the removal of the white crosses that blanket the burial grounds of our fallen heroes in Normandy.
