If that's a Steely Dan ping list, count me in.

For non-beautiful, complex music, I have to go with Zappa (although some of his stuff was quite beautiful in its own pungent way).

I got to sing in the chorus during a performance of The Gates Of Justice with Brubeck and his sons at The University Of Georgia back in 1976.

He was as excited as we were!

Actually, jazz was believed by many to be decadent, "black" music, which is one of the reasons that it was banned by Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

Swing Heil!

It was these kinds of recordings which became the eventual basis for the current school of jazz known as "Nordic jazz" - that is, the slower, more laconic, more classically-influenced variety of jazz available on European labels like ECM and recorded by German and Scandinavian artists like Jan Garbarek and Niels Orsted Petersen.

Metheny started on ECM, and that's still his best stuff.

Was never a big Metheny guy, but he is an excellent contributor to the ensemble on Joshua Redman's Wish album.

Just stellar work there - it's no Zero Tolerance For Silence.

I have that one. I just got "Sounds of Summer Running" that Metheny did with Bill Frissell and Marc Johnson. I like when Pat's more folkish stuff.

Well, I meant specifically classical pianists learning to play jazz by relative scale degree versus written note, not whether they can transpose or not. Horn players typically transpose well, as you know! :)

An album that should be in EVERYONES collection"

I've called my local used CD store.
They've put aside the remastered edition for me.
Now if I can only get there through this blinkity-blank snowstorm we're having.

I've bought the Time Out CD and am throughly enjoying it.
Any recommendations for a second and third Brubeck CD to buy?

Jazz Goes To College is another great Brubeck record, along the lines of Time Out exc ept that the soloing is more inventive, in my opinion.

After that, look into some of Brubeck's sacred works.
