Sadly, the cafeteria is still open here in Los Angeles, and there's a whole smorgasbord of outrages served daily.
Cardinal Mahony's attitude towards homosexuality is well documented, and is diametrically opposed to these teachings of our Holy Father.
In all of his public utterances, the cardinal heaps nothing but praise on "our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters". He has an openly homosexual deacon who designs the archdiocesan web site, his "ministry to gays and lesbians" is just another version of the outlawed Dignity organization, his seminary is full of gays, his vocations office is run by a nun, and I could go on and on...
Here's a little peek into the darkness:
(EXCERPT)
As the new Millennium dawned, the Los Angeles Archdiocese was known as one of the most homosexual-friendly in the United States. As early as 1991, Jim Johnson, caregiver to AIDS patients, openly stated that Roger Mahony was surrounded by homosexual priests and alluded to several gay bishops
In 1993, the Cardinal helped to fund and produce the video A Journey for Understanding Gays and Lesbians in the Church. The video affirmed that there was nothing wrong with any gay or lesbian person whatsoever, that being gay was a blessing and a gift, and had something prophetic toward remodeling the Church In 1996, the L.A. Archdiocese celebrated a Mass for its lesbian and gay Catholics during Gay and Lesbian Pride Week in West Hollywood, and sponsored a booth at its Pride Festival. In 1997, Cardinal Mahony himself said the Mass and delivered the homily for The National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries at its annual convention in Long Beach.
Mahony also founded a diocesan office of ministry to lesbian and gay Catholics as early as 1986. He headed it up with an openly homosexual priest, Fr. Peter Liuzzi, who had nothing but praise for the Cardinal for never rebuking those gays and lesbians who are not celibate. The Archdiocese also sought out an openly pro-homosexual Jesuit psychologist for its priests, Fr. Curtis Bryant.
The same open tolerance for homosexuality prevailed at St. Johns Seminary in Camarillo, where seminarians spend the first four of their seven years of priestly training. A Newsweek article (May 20, 2002) reported 30-70 percent of the seminarians at St. Johns were gay and bisexual. Seminarians forced to leave for being too rigid have described across-the-board tolerance of homosexuality and no teaching on the Churchs proscription of it. In the sordid atmosphere of a number of post-Vatican II seminaries like this, many sodomites have been ordained priests, protecting and promoting one another in what has been named the lavender Mafia
Has the climate of tolerance for homosexuality changed in the Los Angeles Archdiocese? While it is not so open or visible the Gay and Lesbian Ministry office was closed in 2002 for financial reasons there is no indication of any attitude change.
In an April 27, 2002 interview on Fox News, Mahony boasted about the warm and wonderful relationship of the Archdiocese with its very large gay, lesbian community. He also affirmed that homosexuals should be allowed to be ordained priests, that a homosexual or heterosexual inclination was irrelevant so long as the person was able to commit himself to a lifelong life of celibacy.
Mahony shields himself behind the progressivist lie that there is no relationship whatsoever between homosexuality and pedophilia. However, even a progressivist expert on the topic, Fr. Donald Cozzens, clearly affirms the opposite. Id est, that regarding the clergy, the two vices are profoundly linked since 90 percent of the priest abusers target teenager boys. If the abused teen is under 16, the priest is termed a pedophile, if he is older, the priest is called a homosexual. It is the same vice divided by a thin line of age difference in the victims.
So while the Cardinal drones zero tolerance to the press like a broken record, his unconditional support of homosexuality and his personal acceptance of homosexual priests seems to indicate a strong complacency toward the sexual abuse of teenagers over 16, to say the least.

Disturbing, as is the comment after yours.
It's a battle, and it's not over yet.
A shame that the Vatican took so long to do this. It would have been nice to have heard this from the Pope before, say, Gene Robinson was elected Bishop, or before the complete homo-ization of television and other entertainment occurred. There needed to be a real, honest discussion years ago of the basic immorality and immaturity of homosexual practice, before it became just another "alternative lifestyle" and even "hip" in some places. I've known many men who engaged in homosexual practice and died as a result, who might have been saved by such a discussion.
I tend to think that Benedict XVI is a ball player. Three strikes and you're out.
1. He has sent a delegation to the US to visit the seminaries and ensure they are in compliance.
2. He has now issued an 'instruction', in clear but strong terms, restating the Catholic Church's position on admission of homosexuals to the seminary.
If, as Cardinal Mahony plans to do, these bishops ignore the directives, they may well find themselves suffering the same fate as the Conventual Franciscans in Assisi. FULL STORY
Hang in there! The pendulum will eventually swing the other way. I pray for their successors. What a mess to have to clean up.
Rule One: No Poofters!
Several Vatican documents and letters over the years have said gays or men with homosexual tendencies should not be ordained, regardless of whether they can remain celibate.
A Feb. 2, 1961, Vatican document, Instruction on the Careful Selection and Training of Candidates for the States of Perfection and Sacred Orders, made clear homosexuals should be barred from the priesthood.
(Advancement) to religious vows and ordination should be barred to those who are afflicted with evil tendencies to homosexuality or pederasty, since for them the common life and the priestly ministry would constitute serious dangers, said the document from the then-Vaticans congregation for religious.
A 1997 letter from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments says admission may not take place if there exists a prudent doubt regarding the candidates suitability. It does not specify that homosexuality constitutes a prudent doubt, but an American official at the Vatican, the Rev. Andrew Baker, has suggested in an article in the Jesuit magazine America that it does.
In 2002, Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estevez, then-prefect for the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, advised against allowing gays in the priesthood in a letter that was published in the congregations publication Notitiae.
The Vatican press office announced in November 2002, at the height of the U.S. clergy sex abuse scandal, that the Congregation for Catholic Education was drawing up guidelines for accepting candidates for the priesthood that would address the question of whether gays should be barred.
The bigger question now is how the new instruction will be enforced. Judging from pope Benedict XVI's actions to date, I am confident that he has a plan in place to deal with any dissent. He's been chomping at the bit to deal a strong blow to this situation and now has the opportunity.
My brother in law is a Holy Cross priest from Notre Dame (not there presently). He is very liberal (not gay though) and doesn't like Pope Benedict.
Correction: Death style.
Death of the soul.
Same here in Albany, and Rochester and Rockville Centre, NY. Wherever you find Archbishop Jadot's appointees still in their positions (and that includes Roger Cardinal Mahony), you will find a large number of homosexual priests, though few new seminarians. With shrunken enrollments, these bishops have now implemented Lay Ecclesial Ministers to compensate for the loss. In fact, this week's edition of the diocesan newspaper features this story - For 20 years, Schoharie Catholics have had pastor named Joan . Yup, our bishop is a real trailblazer. He put her in charge of that parish 20 years ago!
Hang in there. Have confidence that Pope Benedict XVI has a plan in place for dealing with any dissenters.
Yes, I share your optomism that this Pope has no stomach for any of this. Not likely to countenance any of this feline deference of recent decades which has been shown toward a bunch of whining, squeeling fairies who have shown themselves to be, almost by definition, devoid of moral values.

Vatican = Gutsy
(a characteristic sadly in lack in many of today's churches)
You were saying?
"You were saying?"
Pardon?
Ah - I see. You switched threads. Didn't notice. Sorry.
As regards Mahony, I take a small consolation in the fact that he'll be gone for sure in about five years, please God.
If the District Attorney has his way, he'll be gone in less time than that.
On a side note, I was floored by this comment from Bishop Gerald Barnes of the neighboring San Bernardino diocese, which is also putting lay people in charge of parishes and forcing the pastor to the sidelines:
"The pastoral coordinator is the pastoral and spiritual leader of the parish," said Bishop Barnes....

YIKES!!!
Thanks. I have the flu this morning and now you've made me want to throw up.
Gross Yuck Blech!
Raymond Arroyo aired some video clips from the USCCB conference this month, showing the bishops discussing their new document on 'lay ecclesial ministers'. Several of the more orthodox bishops challenged the terminology 'minister' and one even contested the right of the USCCB to enact this documentation. He was shot down. But, not surprisingly, Mahony stepped up to the microphone to thank those responsible for developing this new piece of liberal trash.
Hang in there!! If you ever feel overwhelmed, freepmail me. We can commiserate over our mutual situations.
The Catholic Church has always maintained this stance; some bishops chose to ignore it. Ping to #46
