The reason to carry a concealed weapon isn't that it will reduce crime because it probably doesn't.

According to John Lott's studies, which use data gathered from all applicable jurisdicitions, rather than a cherry picked few, it does.

What makes retired police officers so much more special than regular competent citizens who have tested that they know how to handle firearms and don't have a criminal records?

One of the purposes of the second ammendment is to make "authority figures" nervous of "stepping over the line" and to remind them who signs their paychecks. Giving them special rights circumvents this.

It is relatively easy to get and C and C permit here in Florida and no uptick in crime rate.

What? Florida didn't become the "Gunshine State"? Neither did Texas, or any of the other 35 some states which have "shall issue" CHL and in Alaska (one of the 35) and Vermont which provide for "Carry What you want, when and how you want to", just like "right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" requires.

I believe that there is no credible evidence that carrying a concealed firearm reduces crime and that passing a concealed carry law in Wisconsin will do more harm than good.

What cave has this troglodyte been living in for the last 20 years? Somebody please mail him a copy of Professor Lott's book, and someone else please read it to him.

I'm unclear here... Has there yet to be a locale where concealed carry was introduced that had an increase in crime?

Anywhere? Anywhere?

Nope, always it is an across the board decrease in crime, and the local hospitals usually report fewer gunshot victims.

I was living in FL in '87 when the shall issue CCW law was passed. IIRC the FL murder rate fell by almost 1/3 within the first 5 years after the law went into effect. The antis tried to account for the drop in crime by all kinds of other excuses, but everyone knew that the fact that law abiding people could now legally carry concealed firearms was primarily responsible.

"At the same time, I can't help but wonder why so much hatred and invective posting comes from supposed conservative message boards for the Police."

Two reasons 1.)Too many cops are pussy bullies.
2.)Too many cops who aren't pussy bulllies don't do anything when they see their fellows abusing their authority or even breaking the law.

Police THEMSELVES are responsible for much of the contempt for the uniform that many freepers and people in general feel.

There is nothing more dangerous to a cops life on the job than disrespect for the uniform.

I haven't read all the posts, though I intend to do so, so someone (or a number of folks) saw this too:

I strongly support the ability for people to defend themselves, but I don’t believe that carrying a concealed firearm is the only way to accomplish this.

A firearm is certainly not the only way to protect yourself but in most instances it surely is the best way. What does this man want? A 100-lb. lady to duke it out with a 250-lb. brute? Damn, but he lacks even the basics of logical thinking.

In other words you want the right to carry but deny me the same. Bite me!

That's how I see it too.

Allowing Wisconsin residents to carry concealed firearms may not reduce crime. If anything, crime may increase and there will be, without a doubt, more firearms in our homes and on our streets.

I wonder why Wisconsin is so different from all of the other states that have done it--all had a large drop in crime.

I agree that retired law enforcement professionals should be permitted to carry a concealed firearm as long as they follow state and federal laws and those policies presented to them by their former law enforcement agencies.

I see, so the police can protect themselves but the lowly citizens shouldn't? Why are law-abiding citizens presumed to not be responsible enough to carry concealed?

This letter sounds like a plant. The guy probably isn't really an officer.

This link is the Racine City Police Department feedback link to the Chief of Police, David Spenner

Adam Meyers does not appear on the organization chart or in their published directory.

Why not let the chief know that based on this man's writings, it doesn't appear he has the judgement to carry a firearm competantly.

ADAM A. MEYERS is one of the most egotistical Aholes I have ever had the misfortune of hearing.

What a pompous A$$!

Only Adam understands the ramifications of taking someones life in self defense.
Only Adam knows how to diffuse a situation without deadly force.
Adam is an egocentric idiot with a God complex.

The London Daily Mirror is of the opinion that Officer Adam A. Meyers is full of crap in thinking that he requires a firearm for his own personal protection.  I wonder how he would feel if his right to self defense is deemed unnecessary.
