You apparently think illegal immigration as a crime is similar to stealing, murder and raping.
I keep wondering how bad it has to get before Bush realizes the border has to be sealed. Murder, mayhem, rape, robbery, D.U.I.'s, nothing seems to faze the administration. Even a terrorist attack out west, with the perps having entered illegally won't matter. They'll try to cover it up or simply say they can across from Canada.
Is it the Hispanic vote or is it a govt. think tank scenario showing that neighboring poorer countries are likely to produce terrorists by the thousands, a la bin Laden. Clearly the US is the target of envy and hatred because we live comparatively well, and Bush is trying to export capitalism, etc. to lift all boats.
Unfortunately, how are we going to persuade them to go back home once they're here? Most mean to make their fortune and then go home, but never do. And now, with a quarter of Mexico already here, half of the remaining population...the middle class...has said in a poll that they'd head north tomorrow. This is bad. Really bad. We simply can't assimilate so many people all at once, especially those who don't speak English, don't share our cultural values, or work ethic; and a good many really think they'll retake half the US in the name of Mexico and kick out US citizens. This is mass migration, invasion, and intolerable.
And that is why a guest worker program (instead of the unregulated border that we have now) would be an improvement where we could do a lot of screening.
First, my entire thesis on this thread is that the people posting stuff like "the illegals are bad drivers, therefore deport them" is a fringe issue and probably disingenous too.
I never said "the illegals are crooks, therefore deport them" was a fringe issue. This could very well be a valid issue.
However, a guest worker program could cut down on the criminals among the illegal population.
(1) Stop the giveaway of birth certificates, e.g., free citizenship, to illegal Mexican women who cross the border to deliver their babies. No more anchor babies.
(2) Whenever a noncitizen applies to a government agency or other official office for a benefit, or a service, have them demonstrate proof of legal residency. That means schools, emergency rooms and hospitals, DMVs, voter registration, etc. If the person is not legal, then the issue is reported to the Border Patrol. Whether the service is provided or not is up to the state or municipality.
(3) Rigorously enforce labor laws with those businesses that hire illegals -- construction, WalMart, agriculture.
What will happen, over time, is that being here illegal is not profitable anymore. They illegals will trickle home. Or they will walk into Border Patrol offices and ask to be sent home.
But here's the final catch. Once they leave, two things will happen. The businesses that employ them will innovate and find ways to replace the manual labor. Automated pickers might be developed to harvest strawberries. And better, yet, the wages for these manual labor tasks will rise, and the honest-to-goodness Americans at the bottom of the wage scale will take the jobs that they formerly shunned. Maybe picking fruit is for people with young backs, but if the pay is $12/hr, and not $4, then this may become the job of choice for youths who would otherwise be hanging out at the mall, or for recovering drug addicts who want to do something productive but can't find someone to hire them for an office.
Illegals are not here doing work "that no one else will do." They are accepting wages "that no one else will accept."
The guest worker program will accomplish nothing. It will just mean more fraudelent preparation of guest worker papers. Remember the amnesty programs in the 1980s and 1990s? All they did was create entire industries involved in the generation of fraudulent electricity bills, personal mail, work histories, etc.
If you think I'm sensitive about this, be advised that I was raised in Southern California and have seen entire communities dragged down into the mud. They are 10 years from becoming Tijuana.
Save your breath, Staytrue is a one trick pony who won't do with facts.AWB
This from someone who is disingenuous themselves...will keep posting that the Guest worker program is the only solution will go off with out reading entire posts or statements and derides other posters for not being honest in their statements, when if he had actually read the entirety of most of the posters statements out here would see they state clearly what the what done with the illegals and are not just dancing on the "fringe" issues.
Just call him what he is a limousine liberal... he ran this one trick pony for several hours yesterday and disappeared my suspicion is that he will do so again today after hawking the Guest worker program mantra again.
In post 146, I thank you for a decent proposal in a decent manner of presentation.
But
In point 1, you need a constitutional amendment to get that which will be extremely difficult and I do support you on point one. Anchor babies should not be citizens.
In point 2, I think you have to provide emergency room services to anyone coming through the door. If you are having a heart attack and left your wallet at home while playing on the ball field, I don't think you would appreciate being denied treatment because you did not have proof of residency. Plus when I was in Italy, I needed to go to the ER and I'm glad I did not have to go to the hotel room first for my passport.
Third, I think illegals are better workers than the lowest rung of US citizens. Look at the looters in NO and I will take the illegals anytime. I'm not sure if you can get the lowest rung up to speed to replace the illegals in terms of either price or quality of work and this will be a drag and burden on US businesses.
But all this is really off topic. On this thread, I felt that the bashing of illegals driving served no purpose because that is not the main reason (or barely any reason at all) for wanting the illegals gone.
