Because I think that if a holiday is important enough for the federal government and financial institutions to close, Penn should close.

Having class on MLK day would re-establish consistency, but I don't think it'd be appropriate. It's a slap in the face to the whole country, whose Congress declared these holidays.

No signs today on Locust Walk commemerating Columbus. The "Queer History Month" signs are out though, sponsored by some Penn Allies group.

There was, however, a bunch of pro-lifers walking around with pictures of aborted fetuses. I'm sure they faced lots of opposition here.

Speaking as a person of noncolor, I can say I am outraged the U of Penn is setting aside a day of observance for that old philandering, fellow-travelling, plagiarizing Rev. Michael Luther King. Because I am offended, I expect the university to meet my demand to drop its plans and cancel the MLK observance. To atone for this act of intolerance in planning to honor King, they should instead honor Jesse Helms, another person of noncolor, so as to soothe my sensitivity.

Because I think that if a holiday is important enough for the federal government and financial institutions to close, Penn should close.

Since when you, self-proclaimed "conservative" look up to the government?

ANd, more importantly, why do you know not of the history of your school, which is older than the United States? Why do you know not of the proud stoic tradition that most universities obey not closing even in fairly inclement weather?

All this is apparently less important to you than what the Fed government says.

And, why do you make an exception to your school? Does the public transportation work on bank holidays? Yes it does. Are 100% of fast food and other restaurants open? Yes they are. This country obeys only two holidays declared by the government: a few hours of Thanksgiving and Christmas. On Christmas, even the movie theaters are open.

You've grown up with this. You consumed all these services provided to you by other people during all these federal holidays. Never once did you consider those a slap in the fact of hte whole country --- as long as you CONSUMED.

Now that you actually have to work and study somehow that has become a slap in the face of the country.

You show yourself to be a self-centered childish whiner. That is your right. Just stop pretending please that you care about principles and traditions of this country. Be honest.
