"- THE ACTUAL TEXT, GIVING THE TERRORIST DETAINEES FULL RIGHTS AND PROTECTION OF THE US CONSTITUTION ANYWHERE, EVEN OUTSIDE THE US AND CREATING US LAW BASED ON THE UN."

Your headline is misleading. It does not give them the rights you imply. The intent and extent of this, is to simply prohibit mistreatment.

It also, simply affirms that the GCs and UN guidelines already followed are adhered to.

The only NAYS were as follows:

NAYs ---9

Allard (R-CO); Bond (R-MO); Coburn (R-OK); Cochran (R-MS); Cornyn (R-TX); Inhofe (R-OK); Roberts (R-KS); Sessions (R-AL); Stevens (R-AK)

I am glad to see John Cornyn's name on this list. I am more impressed by him everyday. Potential Presidential material down the road, I believe.

Why, O why, does melanoma take so long?

Whatever you think of this vote or of John McCain, that's a disgusting comment.

And yes, I happen to be a cancer survivor.

The amendment ... would establish uniform standards for the interrogation of people detained by U.S. military personnel, prohibiting "cruel, inhuman or degrading" treatment while they are in U.S. custody.

"Powell joins a growing group of retired generals and admirals who blame prison abuse on "ambiguous instructions," as the officers wrote in a recent letter. They urged restricting interrogation methods to those outlined in the U.S. Army Field Manual on Intelligence Interrogation, the parameters that McCain's measure would establish."

That's the way I'm reading this.

I mean, at first glance, yeah I'm inclined to not like it. But what does it say about us as Americans if we can't prove that we treat our fellow humans, disgusting as they may be, better than they treat us?

Yer right. I'll ask admin mod to pull it. However, McCain cannot depart the planet -- by natural causes, natch -- quickly enough for me.

Swamp Fox can you please ping the SC list?

Another nail in the coffin of our "beloved" senior senator from SC. And for all you Graham lovers out there, and you know who you are because I have argued with you about Graham and his compromise with the RAts, Now what do you say? SC upstate News talk radio was all over him this morning. South Carolinians we cannot reelect this McCain kissing traitor again. He has lied to us so many times.
Support Ravenel for Senate in 2008!

The Chinese and North Koreans are laughing their butts off.

Bush has gone soft and left.

Congress has gone even further left.

Both the White House and Congress act like enemies are more important than our own soldiers.

Why fight America when America is fighting and defeating herself?

The Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch are out of the closet--they are in-your-face performing anti-American activities.

The sheep herd of American citizens stand by and just watch our "leaders" trash America and boost enemies.

Yes, mistreatment is all this is about. Article I, Section 8 of the Constituiton gives Congress the power to, "make rules concerning captures on land and water", and to "make rules for the regulation of the land and naval forces."

I was thinking about this overnight. From the perspective of the military - isn't there a good side to this? If I were a soldeir, I think I would want to a clear uniform policy on what we can do - one that can't be over-ridden by someone who shows up and gives me orders.

Ok, good to finally see some rational analysis in this thread. Does this actually make anything illegal that was previously legal?

"Cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment" was already illegal, wasn't it? Otherwise, what was Lyndie England convicted of?

I hope Bush vetoes the entire bill and I would love to start a recall of EVERY Senator who voted for it.

I saw something where Arlen Specter had the veto pen in his possession - possibly he even stole it. Until Arlen returns it, Bush is unable to veto anything. Mr. Specter - please return Mr. Bush's veto pen.

And these are the Republican Senators that we want to fight for our Supreme Court nominees with the Dems? Give me a break. McCain and the other weak Senators are going to cause so much damage to the USA.

One hopefully note: The House-approved version of it does not include the detainee provision.

Do we really want to win this war? When they hit us with WMD, can we do away with all the civility already? What a bunch of jackasses.

Wow. I can't believe all the people in here who support torture, confusion among our troops, and the President's ability to have total control in wartime.
