Don't make these cheap political points

Nothing CHEAP about evacuating 2.5 million people on one hand and evacuating very few on the other. How many deaths did that non decision [cheap political point] cause?

There's a lot cheap about trying to squeeze votes out of a wall-to-wall screwup like Katrina. Furthermore, the panicked scramble in Texas by people spooked from Katrina wasn't as well-managed as you appear to think.

". The media has all but ignored the other locations which were devestated by Katrina."

Yup. You probably don't even know that downtown Mobile was flooded.

"Texas started earlier and the people who wanted to , got out. Some much easier than others"

No, actually they didn't. I have two sisters-in-law who live in Houston. Both had planned to evacuate, but on seeing the massive traffic screwup, decided to stay put. Happily, that turned out to be the right decision.

But the reason for the traffic snarlup was that TEXAS HAD NO CONTRAFLOW PLAN, because the officials thought that their "traffic system was too complicated".

I'll bet that RIGHT NOW, some officials are working like hell to design a contraflow plan to put into place before the next one.

Yes, but only from the first day's reporting, when I was dying to hear reports of my home town, which got a direct hit. I was so frustrated hearing about Mobile all day and not a word about Slidell. At the time I found it incomprehensible that Mobile could have gotten such damage when the eye passed over two states over. The enormous scope of Katrina is mind boggling.

Once the media got their anti-Bush angle, they forgot about all other Katrina stories. It's sickening. It seems that the most newsworthy Katrina story is the fact that she caused such extensive damage over such a widespread area.

How are y'all doing in Mobile now? Didn't I hear that Mobile got 15 feet of water? That's an incredible amount of flooding. I hope you fared all right.

Gov Murkowski gave a message to Alaskans last week: Don't expect Gummint to be there right away in case of general disaster. Get yourself prepared to some degree so you can get yourself safe for a time.

We knew that, of course, and it is forthright of the Gov to come right out with it.

Yes, Slidell and points east took the blunt of the hurricane and was virtually ignored once the water came into NO. Pisses me off.

Mobile is drying out and almost back to normal...Bayou La Batre and Dauphin Island are still seriously affected. Bayou La Batre still has people in tents w/o AC.

You mean a contraflow that doesn't bottleneck past beltway 8? It's not possible. People who depend on the government are going to come out losing every time. Your sisters were lucky Houston didn't take a direct hit. They had dozens of ways out besides the freeways and stayed home because the government didn't lead them . Look at a map of Texas, see all those little towns not located on 45,59,10,290,225? They go places every day and don't use primary highways. People in the city need to learn other routes. There are too many ways out of Houston to have stayed behind because of traffic jams. It's not the fault of any government agency that people are too stupid to read a map

Yep, you are exactly right. I have traveled literaly hundreds of miles on back highways, ranch roads, and farm to market roads. Best road system in the US to my knowledge. It's fun to just keep going in the general direction you are headed on secondary roads and still get to your destination. Nowadays I use delorme and a gps unit and a laptop. LOT's of back roads everywhere in Texas.

I don't believe Houston ever called for a mandatory evacuation. The people jamming the freeways left on their own accord. Galveston and some of the low lying areas were to evac first. They DID have a plan.

Unfortunately for you, I "can" read a map, have been on those roads myself, and it IS possible.

The idea is to have a plan in place, and use it. Louisiana had, did, and succeeded. Texas didn't, and thus had problems.

"Louisiana had, did, and succeeded. Texas didn't, and thus had problems"

Louisiana had a plan, didn't follow it and around 1000 died. Texas put their plan in effect well ahead of the storm landfall and suffered few casualties, none attributable to lack of contraflow. Contraflow helps in a situation such as this, but not much if people aren't wise enough to know it's a trap. Learn your local highway system, the government can't save you in advance
