This as well as the drastic change in tone from the Democrats in the Senate over the Katrina response tells me that something is up.... I believe it has something to do with the fact that the people in New Orleans blame the Mayor and the Governor, despite the National Polls that claim some kind of shared blame, or what they wish .... "Bush is to blame"
I believe that the DEMS (The Thinking Dems) know that there attempt to politicize this natural disaster is going to backfire and that the left is being shown to be anti-American (Which they are)
I also believe the left can see that Bush is out in front and leading this effort to respond PROPERLY to this disaster and not finger point and carp on the sidelines like the Left in this country has been doing from day one.
I sum up the Left and the .02%rs here on FR as people who continuously complain about every friggin thing..... And contribute to absolutely friggin NOTHING

I agree, he's no Souter. But he's not necessarily a Scalia or Thomas either. He's somewhat of an enigma and we'll just have to wait to see how he turns out. With other picks we would already know how they'd turn out. Hopefully, that's the case with pick #2

Absolutely. The Democrats are trying to play chess BINGO!
From the article ...
While every senator must vote his or her conscience on the nomination, the danger of such a message is considerable.

FWIW, I think they're just keeping their powder dry 'til the next one comes up.Exactly. The Roberts confirmation is almost a forgone conclusion. This gives the Compost political cover to shred the next nominee - whoever that is. "While we endorsed Judge Roberts, we believe that the current nominee..."

The Dems are playing checkers...If they were playing Chess, they would have known in advance not to retreat from their opposition.
The Dems are (and will remain) on the defensive because they have absolutely nothing to offer besides rage and hate. Hate and rage is not an agenda, it's a recipe for failure, and besides one or two speed bumps, the past 10 years is proof of the failure. They have launched every attack on this President imaginable and they still continue to have their asses handed to them.
A sure sign that the Democrats have lost is when they stop the baseless attacks and call for "Bipartisanship" as the Democrats are calling for today. Just today Blanco denounced the finger pointing and called for unity...... WHY THE SUDDEN CHANGE? :-)
The Rats have been thumped again by the President they hate

John Roberts was a terrific pick. Bush made a great choice....the man is brilliant, goes to Mass every day......oh, right, THAT'S why the left hates him!!

The few thinking Dems that are left in the party realize they have been way over the top on many issues. Donna Brazile was among other things trying to send a message to the party to rein it in. Same with this editorial. Thanks goodness the high visibility Dems are so eaten up by their own anger, they won't take the hint.

Donna Brazile was among other things trying to send a message to the party to rein it in. If I recall, Donna tried reining them in during the 2004 election
They ignored her then and they will ignore the WP now

I think people are presuming that Roberts will oppose abortion. The left rallied against David Souter when he was nominated by Bush Sr. in 1990...the fliers they put out said "Block Souter...he'll let women die". Some were so convinced that the liberal Souter would oppose abortion that 9 Senators, including John Kerry, voted against him.
The Senate voted 90 to 9 to confirm David Souter in 1990, all 9 opponents were democrats: Adams (D-WA), Akaka (D-HI), Bradley (D-NJ), Burdick (D-ND), Cranston (D-CA), Kennedy (D-MA), Kerry (D-MA), Lautenberg (D-NJ), Mikulski (D-MD)

I remember Rush a few weeks ago laughing that some in the print media were trying to drop hints to the Dems on how to respond to Bush.

" FWIW, I think they're just keeping their powder dry 'til the next one comes up." Probably, but if this one flies through, then they have a new problem. If the next isnt any worse, then they have to justify the different treatment.
