"This disaster proved that folks are just that, folks."

True, although some folks loot more than other folks.

Sen Daniel Patrick Moinihan wrotre a book about the phenomenon back in the 60s.
The other liberals ignored it then and will ignore it now, because it manufactures a steady stream of democratic voters.
When ethnic groups move up the socioeconomic ladder, they start voting republican.

Notice that McWhorter avoids mentioning LBJ and the Democrat congress that kicked off the "War on Poverty?" What's wrong with telling the historical truth of the matter?

"I'd be interested to know how many blacks Jackson has helped from his OWN pocket."

The Reverend Jackson paid off his knocked up mistress, didn't he?

"This was the first time that whites or blacks had taught black people not to work as a form of civil rights. Politicians and bureaucrats jumped on the new opportunity for political patronage and votes, and welfare quickly became a programme that essentially paid young women to have children."

This is an excellent summation of Democratic Party policy toward the urban poor in this country. Oh, and let's not forget the university liberals, who still believe that current welfare is not enough.

Here is one of the best summaries I have ever read of what the Democrat Party did to the traditional black American family:

"Meanwhile, the most grievous result of the new consensus was black American history’s most under-reported event, the expansion of welfare. Until now, welfare had been a pittance intended for widows, unavailable as long as the father of one’s children was able-bodied and accounted for, and granted for as little time as possible.

"In 1966, however, a group of white academics in New York developed a plan to bring as many people onto the welfare rolls as possible. Across the country, poor blacks especially were taught to apply for living on the dole even when they had been working for a living, and by 1970 there were 169% more people on welfare nationwide than in 1960.

"This was the first time that whites or blacks had taught black people not to work as a form of civil rights. Politicians and bureaucrats jumped on the new opportunity for political patronage and votes, and welfare quickly became a programme that essentially paid young women to have children.

"Only in 1996 was welfare limited to five years and focused on training for work. But by then generations of poor blacks had grown up in neighbourhoods where there was no requirement that fathers support their children. Few grew up watching their primary parent work for a living. Most people paid nominal subsidies as rent and were thus less inclined to treat their living spaces well.

"The multigenerational welfare family with grandmothers in their forties became typical: young women had babies in their teens because there was no reason not to with welfare waiting to pick up the tab.

Bookmarked.

first thought....the people in the Superdome were more diverse than what the MSM wants you to believe.....there was a large contingent of Vietnamese, and there were some whites, although not many....

for sure, some were more well off than others, and just thought the Superdome was going to be "safe"......

about generations living off the dole......that is exactly what Appalachia is like....young grandmas on dissability as well as their children and as well as their grand children.....why work when you can hunt and fish and screw around all day and get freebies from the govt.....

this is all why WORK MUST BE REWARED not belittled....

I look at my taxes....then I think of people even with one child out of wedlock getting those big bucks back from the Feds with the earned income credit.....they get more money back then they paid in....

then again, maybe we taxpayers are the stupid foolish ones.....

"If I understand correctly, blacks continue to vote for the same political party that keeps them trapped in a system designed to keep them poor and dependent"

Correct! I my opinion, that's because they have become "Democratic Dependents". They are dependent on the very party that has kept them in poverty, turned it's head when lawlessness prevailed, and encouraged the stagnant life some Blacks lead.

Make no mistake.. there are many who have chosen to rise above all the hype and BS that has been drummed into their heads. Bravo for them! Hopefully, NO will be a turning point and not a regress for the black community.

As my grandpa used to say, "If a person can walk, they can work".

why work?.....why bother?....

McWhorter is an outspoken black conservative.

Outspoken and gutsy, considering he teaches linguistics in the land of Libs at Berkeley. I have seen him a few times on FNC and was impressed by his rational thinking and calm but firm demeanor.

McWhorter's article is brilliant. But I'd favor one form of government jobs for displaced New Orlean folks who volunteer-- border partol agents.

Let them build small towns and villages across the most porus parts of the border with Mexico-- starting with tent cities and quonsets-- then moving up as the border is strengthened. If we really need illegal immigration labor, then we will make provisions to let the needed numbers with the needed backgrounds in legally.

Very, very true statement. That is why Robert Byrd is the Lyndon Johnson of West Virginia. Keep the folks dependant out there in the hollers and bus em' to the pols twice a year.

the enlightened white person saw black violence as “understandable”. . . This meant a largely theatrical black separatist ideology, drastically short on constructive aims, had a public sanction that it had never had before. Hating whitey for its own sake now had an ear among the influential and quickly became the word on the street.

This is the salient quote. The target of the left has always been white America and talking about the undeniably bad effects lefty social beliefs have had on blacks is a bit like whining about the bad effects Nazi ideas had on the Ustashe and the Croats. Well, yes, but . . .

"Few thinking people regret the flower children’s opposition to the Vietnam war"

Speak for yourself. Plenty of thinking people think the flower children were shills for ruthless tyrants who murdered two million innocent people. Then emasculated the United States in the 1970s, which led to the deaths of several million more. If Reagan hadn't come along, they might have lost the cold war and destroyed civilization. They tried, as far as had the power.
