We have coyotes where we live but have large dogs which pack up against them. One of our dogs is a weiner dog mutt but he hangs with the pack so he's not in danger.
For this reason alone, as long as coyotes can contract rabies they will be among the species of animals that attack humans.
Thanks everyone for your help. One thing for sure, there seems to be quite a few pet attacks and we had no idea. Little "Abigail" was a sassy dachshund she loved her yard and protected it daily with glee. Obviously, she got into a battle way over her head and she will be missed. The thing that is so crazy is that the torso seemed to be "scooped" out, there wasn't any chewing or anything like that, so awful and we pray it was fast. I talked to my niece today and they left meat out last night as bait which was not touched. My nephew is doing the same tonight but is going to keep watch, he is well-armed and so we shall see. They are concerned about it being a rogue type animal and even though they do not have small children, the neighborhood does. Thanks again for all the information.
That works too!
Mountain lion.
I guess you are right, coyotes would NEVER attack humans.
I would tend to think lion attack over coyote. Most coyotes hunt in packs and there would have been ample evidence of several animals in your yard. I'm very sorry for your loss. A motion sensor light in the back yard will be a deterrent for all sorts of predators, human and animal. If it is a mountain cat and your neighbors have small children, it might be worth investing in.
If that doesn't do the job, there's also a 12-gauge pump shotgun on the ready.
We live in a very rural area. Haven't seen any coyotes but I'm told they're here.
I have seen some around rig sites in West Texas that I first took as German Shepherds.
Here is a short course on coyote hunting: Varmint Al's Hunting Page
Good Hunting... from Varmint Al
It was a wolf attack..plain and simple. The alfa male came straight on in both cases while the others circled. Both cases were attacks on loggers. Now they are trying to say that loggers know nothing about such things. Laughable.
Animal cruelty and abusive is nothing but cowardice. A dishonorable character flaw for anyone purportedly in the military.
