I realize the scope of Hurrican Andrew was smaller than this, but still... ya know how we prevented armed gangs from taking over? Everywhere you looked, there were hand painted signs "Looters will be KILLED", and guess what, a couple of them were shot to death, one at point blank range, in the face, the guy had powder burns on his face. It made the news. My neighbor loaned me his 9mm for a few months.. it was known that in Homestead florida, people down there were a little bit red-necky, and would not hesitate to shoot. Every block was its own "armed gang" to counter anyone who came in looking for loot. It was Robert Heinlein's fantasy world, and the good guys won.
PS. And if people think it's a nightmare in New Orleans now, just wait until the epidemics start breaking out any day now..
Whites are the minority in NO...so its ok. /extreme sarcasm
And what of the good folks in Biloxi? God punishing them too?
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
"I agree with you. When this hurricane was predicted, I wondered if there was a reason why NO was to be the place for one of the largest hurricanes ever recorded. When I was in NO many years ago, I was struck with the evil. It's an interesting, historical city, but one that has more than its share of sheer evil. Yes, other places have it too, but I've never been anywhere that was so utterly filled with it. I've been praying that we would hear God's voice in this disaster."
Do me a favor then, go east .. away from me.
You figure that you could just walk in any direction away from Poydras Street and you'd be on dry land in no time ... and there would be a McDonalds drive thru waiting to serve you.
I lived in New Orleans for 3 years. I was working offshore out of Venice when Camille blew through in '69 and this several orders of magnitude worse. They didn't leave because, after the storm hit, there was no way out. I'll grant that there were probably some that could have/should have left before the storm but after it hit, they were screwed.
Looking out the window of my office right now (Fannin and OST in Houston) I can see the folks that stayed at the Superdome offloading at the Astrodome - into AC and food/water/medical attention.. You'd be somewhere around LaPlace right now, if you hadn't already drowned.
In a sign of growing lawlessness, Tenet HealthCare Corp. asked authorities late Wednesday to help evacuate a fully functioning hospital in Gretna after a supply truck carrying food, water and medical supplies was held up at gunpoint.
"There are physical threats to safety from roving bands of armed individuals with weapons who are threatening the safety of the hospital," said spokesman Steven Campanini. He estimated there were 350 employees in the hospital and between 125 to 150 patients.

Yep. good points.
What I was inferring though is there is a huge gang problem in NO and they see this as a golden opportunity to loot and control.
When they see it slipping away they will try to up the chaotic ante.
That was my point, hope it doesn't happen...
Your right as rain though, Important to pray...
Well. I have fox on and will watch for confirmation...jeff goldblatt said they "police" (I'm not sure if he said police or ciizens) even cocked their shot guns to get the personell on the busses while the intended medical patients could only be put in the isles after the seats were filled.
Point well taken, but Americans will not fire machine guns into crowds from helicopters.
This is not the "Running Man" movie. Gov Blanco had her chance, she blew it. The military is moving in to take control, but the right way.
It will be OK buddy. Stay safe.
who said that?
Try to form a sentence.
I imagine that junkies going through withdrawal are responsible for not a small amount of this savagery. Whatever the cause, it is just sickening. People, and I use the term loosely, shooting at the people who are trying to help them. How much lower can things go?
The only drawback at this point to shooting these sub-human pieces of filth is that it will result in more decomposing and disease-spreading corpses in the floodwaters of N.O. Perhaps at this point the folks in charge need to make that tradeoff.
Henry is an awful leader, always has been, even when he was running for office. I might have disagreed with some of Keating's decisions during the OKC bombing, but I couldn't fault his leadership and his ability to bring a degree of calm to the situation. (I still maintain he presided over a massive coverup, but that's a whole other thread.)
However, OKC has a huge gang problem, a lot of it imported from East LA and Mexico. A local kid working at my husband's place of business recently had his window shot out of his car (while he was in it! but he's ok) for crossing one of the gangs. With all the meth and the gangs, and with bad leadership in the city and governor's office, as they say, "there but for fortune... "
I said that right here actually

Blanco won't be governor very long after this.
I don't think that God punishes people as such, but I do believe that He uses disasters such as this to get people's attention. And yes, good people suffer along with the bad. It's the nature of society.
As I heard the story, several state legislators hired the buses to pick up medical patients. The report said that armed state police commaneered the buses for the phone company employees. Some patients were able to board but were in the aisles.
I just cannot BELIEVE this!!
Why the H are they shooting at the choppers?
Seems they'd want everyone else out of NO so that they could REALLY do some looting.
I guess the thugs want nobody evacuated so that they will have folks to terrorize when they've grown bored with stealing.
The shark on Canal st. is just TOO much!
I wonder if that is true.
