I was a friend of Al Hirt's brother...a lovely man who was a teacher of English, and had diabetes. I still miss him. He said I reminded him of the Wife of Bath from the canturbury tales, for some reason....The whole family had problems with depression and diabetes...

From the NHC, an hour old:

KATRINA IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL JUST EAST OF GRAND ISLE LOUISIANA.

Grand Isle is due south of NO. NOT good!

What is going on with the Fox info babes...they seem to have the giggles.

Ever seen folks who laugh at a funeral? Sometimes it's their only way of coping.

That was what she reported.

Sorry about replying so late. Had to shut down to thunderstorms in the area.

This is a growing trainwreck, and I hate seeing it happen.

The one thing you need to undeerstand about the topology of NO, is that it's about 12ft. below sea level, and sandwiched between the Mississippi River and Lake Ponchetrain(sp?).

With a storm surge of 25 ~ 30 ft (plus all the rain).... They're screwed.

Laurie Dhue needs to be placed on assignment - in the Al Anbar province. that will straighten her out.

With the time left until landfall and the area of the Gulf this thing is passing over...it may take a shot at that record. 902 is very, very low.

I pray somehow, that they levees can be spared by this thing verring off one way or the other. It will save many, many lives if it does.

If that's the case, NO may escape the worst of it. Or am I reading this wrong?

Hugo survivor here.
You are correct, the areas to the east side of the eye will receive the highest winds and flooding.

Reports of post-storm help massing in region, but how do they get to NO?

They'll barge on the river - there is plenty of equipment in the region, and additional help can literally come down the river from unaffected states. The biggest issue is how many of the dikes they'll have to blow up to drain the city if the worst case scenario happens.

The most honest truth is that if things go extremely bad, they won't need the extra equipment in the city for days if not a week.

They seem to be positioning their reporters more in the Mobile Bay area. It's almost like they're thinking the landfall will be more in that area.

If that's the case, NO may escape the worst of it. Or am I reading this wrong?

If it heads that far east, the levees on Lake Pontchartrain may welll hold. The problem with a near-miss to the east is the winds would come out of the north off of the lake, and this thing is HUGE in all quadrants.

LA is a strange place, west of NOLA the roads are just built up paths through the swamp. In some places they are very long causeways 6-10 foot over water/swamp. You have to get almost to TX before dry land. So west of NOLA is no place to be in a hurricane. Go north, safest.

You do not want to be in your car on a causeway in hurricane.

It's a shame they never made plans for a Mass evacuation, using public transportation and tent cities for these people to go to.

With a plan in place, to use public busses and school busses from around the state, they could have gotten everybody out. Using cots and blankets from National Guard supplies, they could have gotten them bedded down in school buildings inland

But that would have required a governor with actual competence, and what they have is a 'Rat

I guess they'll just ride the storm out in the SuperDome

That's what the Fox guy said they'd be doing. Who was that guy doing the Jefferson presser? He said he was staying too - that he couldn't ask his deputies & emergency workers to stay if he didn't.

the wall of water from the sea, is pushed ashore in the eastern part of the eye, where the winds blow south to north

The rain fills Lake Ponchatrain which is north of the city. Then the counterclock wise winds (from the north) push the surge into the city, south of the lake. Add rising water levels from the sea and the Mississippi river, two other of the sources of water, and U have a catastrophie. Add landfall at high tide, and it is doom.
