Wow, you were Johnny-on-the-spot right-on with this story. I remember going to bed late one night this past weekend (thought it was Friday, but must've been Saturday ;), thinking about Peter and Gulf War 1. Needless to say, I wake up this morning, and BAM! it's all over the news.
Condolences to the Jenning family and ABC News -- they lost a good anchor (biased, or not).

While growing up in rural WV, I remember my Dad talking politics across the fence with the neighbors. My Dad would have a field day talking politics with Peter Jennings. Considering that both Peter and my Dad have entered into their eternal reward, they are probably talking up a storm now.
May they both rest in peace.

I'm sad to see him go... Rest in peace, Peter Jennings, and may God comfort your family in their grief.

Please, although we may harbor personal feelings on his politics..... this is not the time. I must say that of all the three network anchors, I liked Jennings the best. My prayers go out to his family.
And I would like to also add that I think that some of the comments being made about Jennings political leanings are disgusting and in the worst possible taste. I remember the same thing happening last fall when Christopher Reeve died. If someone is going to disparage someone who died simply because they disagreed with them, then I have serious reservations about everything else these people say or do. Nothing can be accomplished by insulting the reputation of a man who (whether we agreed with him or not) was still liked and admired by millions. The left did the same thing when President Reagan died, but the fact that the left will act in this despicable manner doesn't mean that we should.

R.I.P. Mr. Jennings. He was a familiar face on the news of the old school type. You never saw him in one of those casual morning news chatty talking head threesomes so popular nowadays.

Wow. Count me among the people who didn't even know he was sick until yesterday. I've had a hiatus of a decade or so from mainstream network news. It's nice to see all the classy posts regarding this. RIP Mr. Jennings.

I've no love lost for Peter, nor his using the megaphone that he was granted to promote his own personal agenda (wrongfully, IMHO). It's difficult to just switch off and forget years of that gut-wrenching feeling I had whenever I chanced (unintentionally) to hear him on TV, and it's understandable why many of us can't. That being said...
His was a human life. Although I never agreed with him philosophically, he believed in himself and what he said, the same as we on our side of the fence believe in ourselves...fervently.
I don't know about his smoking, but if true let's not say that's what killed him. His life, like each of ours, would end inevitably. His life may have been shortened by smoking (as my Dad's was at 57 by prostate cancer), but at least his was by his own choice. Personal choices and consequences, isn't that what conservative thought is all about?
My prayers go out to him, and to his family that they may find peace.
Godspeed, Peter.

ABC has begun a worship of St. Jennings with no mention of the costly loss in viewers.
Jennings was the most snide news reader on tv. Rather was just Rather playing a role for one party rule.
