I emailed him too and told him about my father who, as a bus driver in the 30s and 40s, refused to enforce jim crow and then in 1961, integrated the Houston Bus Terminal. Examples of individuals, looking around and doing the right thing with little or no glory.

That says it all.

The South of Course. You knew that. When you begin your inevitable North-bashing then I'll join in.

That "Southern Belle Primer" book is HILARIOUS. My mom has a copy.

It is one of the funniest books I've ever read.
That's probably because it is so true!
"New Times In The Old South" was written by the same author.
Another very good book is Mama Makes Up Her Mind : And Other Dangers of Southern Living.
It's a collection of short stories written by Bailey White.
Her stories about life in rural GA could have easily been set in MS, full of
some of the most rich, and eccentric, characters you've ever come across.
Your mother would like it. ;o)

I only met my Uncle Sully a handful of times since you can guess from my cousin's article they moved around alot and by the time I was born, they had relocated to the Minneasota. My mom used to tell me he was a amazing man just from what he did while he was a NOPD officer. He was a great man who didn't boast about what he did, he just did it.
I read the article when my cousin set it to us and was only when I random googled my Uncle's name that I found this and I have to thank you for posting this so others can also read about him.

Thank you for that great article. This expatriate redneck feels a little more Southern pride today.
