One day back in 1973, a black racist decided to shoot white people. From the Howard Johnson hotel in New Orleans, he killed four civilians and five cops, including my father's close friend, the deputy chief. He shot my father in the arm and ear. The sniper, Mark Essex, was eventually shot down with an Uzi submachine gun my father had managed to acquire for the NOPD through his contacts in Israel.I read a book on this case many years ago (perhaps this one.) The Uzi story is dubious. Here is a site describing this case. The killer was shot from a helicopter. A few quotes:
They were 10 feet off the roof and less than 50 feet from the sniper.
"We were looking eyeball to eyeball at him," Saacks says. With a fresh magazine in his M-16, Saacks opened fire. "I just walked the bullets right into him."
He was hit a number of times," recalls Pitman, in a bit of understatement. An autopsy later revealed Essex had been struck by more than 200 bullets. "The guy was so shot up he had to be picked up with a scooper," says Eddie Rantz, who was perched on a nearby building, armed with a .30-caliber carbine, and who took part in the volley of shots that finally brought Essex down.
The real question is why is the killing of Goodman, Schwerner and Chaney or Emmett Till a big deal and the victims of Mark Essex (and thousands of others) unknown? I'll give you a hint: it ain't about justice.

Oh, and from a reader review in the book link above here is a delicious little quote about Mark Essex allegedly from the New York Times:
"A Terrible Thunder is more than just another fashionable journalistic rehashing of a crime. In its depiction of Essex's abrupt transmogrification it raises questions about the accumulated effect of petty but persistent injustices and about the individual's capacity to endure aggrievement."
