You ask: These inane protests are truly a real and present danger to humanity, but what has changed?

What has changed is that we were attacked on September 11 2001. We were not yet attacked in 1937 when your quotes were made. Pearl Harbor did not come until 4 years later, and the reluctance of these students (and much of the then Republican party, led by Taft) was probably understandable. That said, the statement about not supporting the government of the US in a war effort is not defensible.

I was trying to contrast and compare those times before we were attacked, in both cases.

I guess I put it poorly, and I forgot to put that idea across, ie,

we heard the same things before 9/11 that we heard pre Pearl Harbor, and it was that lack of public resolve that emboldened our enemies to attack us.
