To the democrats, an appointee is the slave of the party that appointed. So they believe we "own" 7 of the 9 justices.
But republicans have traditionally appointed people because of their skill, not ideology, since we didn't expect the judges to be making law, and we wanted people who were good at interpreting statutes and bright enough to sort out inconsistancies.
Of course, before that we just appointed our drinking buddies apparently, which is how come 2 of the "republican" justices are liberal.
If I were a judge, I would be offended by all the Democrat Senators standing on the floor of the Senate and saying that I was "owned" by a political party simply because I was appointed by one.
To look at this another way, many of the judges who were appointed by a republican president were confirmed by a democrat senate.
The democrats were much better at appointing activists than we were at appointing conservatives. And almost all activists tend to go liberal, because liberal theology is, at its core, based on the concept that the smart people will take care of the rest of us. All activists in power will tend to become like parents, or kings, or benevolent dictators trying to make our lives "easier".
I wish a couple of republican senators would point out that if the religious right gets our way, we will end up with justices who will simply follow the laws -- we will still have to convince a majority of the people to get what we want. We aren't appointing judges who are going to require school children to read the bible and pray to Jesus. We aren't picking justices who will ban abortion. We are picking justices who will interpret the constitution as ORIGINALLY written, and give deference to the laws passed by the majority of americans.
In other words, we are picking judges that won't decide that a person who is 17 years, 11 months, and 31 days old, regardless of circumstance, cannot be executed, simply because he committed his crime on February 29 because it was a leap year, rather than on his birthday, in which case it would no longer be unconstitutional to execute him.
My best advice for that situation is---ignore and post to the freepers that are discussing what you want to discuss!
If it gets too bad--leave the thread.
Usually, IMHO, even if there are a few freepers "going at it", if the thread is interesting TO ME, I will stick with it---sometimes, during slow times on the thread, the arguments are entertaining...
Lately, though, things seem to be pretty good here on ole FR!
I'll give him a pass on this one, I'm sure announcing it on Hannity & Colmes will sell more tickets for this great cause, at least it was only once :-)
Do you know what that is about? I know it has something to do with Catholics...
From the Baltimore Sun:
Cardinal William H. Keeler told Loyola College of Maryland yesterday that he will not attend its commencement ceremony tomorrow because he disagrees with the keynote speaker, former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, who supports abortion rights.
The decision comes amid planned protests, led in part by a conservative Catholic group, outside tomorrow's ceremony at the 1st Mariner Arena in downtown Baltimore.
Loyola's interim president, David Haddad, received a strongly worded letter from the cardinal yesterday, saying Keeler would not attend - nor would any auxiliary bishops or any other representative of the archdiocese, college and archdiocese officials said.
"He just feels it's not appropriate given Giuliani's stance on abortion," archdiocese spokesman Sean Caine said. "I don't recall there being similar circumstances where the cardinal's had to make this decision."
wWHOOOooa , and Peach has ChiaJoe BinBiden as the first on the list ,... can wait ti see him "cum-unglued"
My Bishop did this last year to Notre Dame!
ROFLMAO
I can't even remember where I got it!
I believe that that's just a Maine thing. I've noticed that most Maine politicians (Snowe, Collins, Cohen, et al) seem to be just one step above retardation.
yeah , ChiaJoe was a genuine bully , going after Milquetoast Lugar , let me see him do his BEST impression of a stuttering bolshevik , oh that isn't a stretch
Yes and I think that NRO said something like research done by freepers without naming any names.
Matthews rerun on now.
Lord give me strength, I never watch Hardball!
You will LOVE this one!
I am trusting you on this one! I have not been this fired up since Bush's victory speech! Sleep is alluding me! Our Senators all did an OUTSTANDING Job today!
I think Sam knows that we have the votes, but he won't say!
I second what you said, I listened to them all day and all the way up until Sen. George Allen. They did a great job, and so far I'm proud of them
I feel the same way; that's why I am NOT going to read the thread about "It Sucks to Be a Republican."
Ben Nelson looks like Barney Rubble
