Somehow, the scheduled unfolding of the "legs" the craft was to stand on, cause enough of a bump or jostled the spacecraft..."

Geeeez! I would NOT want to be the guy who had to come up with a system that could differentiate "bumps" in somethig so potentially violent as a Martian descent and landing!
