Info on new Pope's commitment to ecumenical outreach to non-Catholic Christians. A biography of Pope Benedict XVI is also included in this account.

As a Protestant, I'm intrigued to see how his outreach takes shape. It'll be interesting.

Its going to interesting to observe how the new Pope handles relations with non-Christian faiths, namely Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism among others.

I'm more interested, though, to see how Pope Benedict XVI treats us Protestants. If reconciliation means coming under the authority of the papacy, I can't imagine many Protestants would go for it.
What would go a long way is an admission that yeah, both sides made some mistakes in the past, but we still have a LOT more in common than not.

Evelyn Strauch, a 54-year-old housewife from Ratzinger's home state of Bavaria, buried her head in her hands and wept as she stood in St. Peter's. "This can't be true," she said. "I had hoped so much that we would get a good pope who would do something for women. ... This is so terrible."
God Bless her soul,
for seeing the Truth of this awful day.
Even a German sees the -horror- of this appointment,
as well they should.

Dear Terabitten,
Pope Benedict will do all he can do to emphasize the common space between the Catholic Church and various Protestant denominations. He will also admit honestly where there are differences where the Catholic Church cannot bridge through change of her unchangeable teachings.
Although Pope John Paul the Great invited non-Catholic Christians to join with him to envision how the Petrine Ministry might be fashioned to serve a Church in which those who are not currently united with Rome might become united, he made clear that the Petrine Ministry is, nonetheless, a divinely-instituted office, and that the elemental authority of this office isn't negotiable.
I think it's likely that Pope Benedict had a significant role in enunciating that policy, and I think it is unlikely to change.

He said his "primary task" would be to work to reunify all Christians and that sentiment alone was not enough. "Concrete acts that enter souls and move consciences are needed," he said. There is much room for hope.

Have you received your written orders from Benedict yet? I heard the plan for world indoctrination was in the mail!

Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday pledged to work to unify all Christians He can focus on uniting Catholics, but need not bother with Christians, thank you very much.
This Uniter does not speak for me.
Christ is the only one who sits at the right hand of God.

I agree with you. There is a hint of authority in his tone that I don'r care for. He is the Catholic leader but the reach stops there.

I think uniting means being friendly, not taking over.
You know, talking over differences, having a beer . . .

I am an ordained Southern Baptist pastor and we as a denomination do not agree or recognize anyone as the final authority other than God. I could not imagine someone Catholic or Protestant exerting a perceived authority without disastrous results.

Being that monks brew the best beer, I will gladly take the pope up on that offer.
