Thank you for your kind words...they made me cry a little but with a mixture of joy and sadness. I'm sure you know what I mean.

Stop with the photos. :( I'm gonna bawl all over the place.

The Pope, President Reagan & Margaret Thatcher. Days I miss wholeheartedly.

Whether you are Catholic or not....he was everyones' Pope.

Don't mourn his death....celebrate his life.

He never allowed his goodness to be overshadowed by his greatness.

thanks for clarifying. guess when I saw it I just immediately saw it as an ignorant put-down. glad to know it's not. in fact, all the posts here have been great. this shows the true colors of Free Republic. I am not exactly a 'devout" catholic but this is a deeply saddening day.

I figure there must be something to do with the assassination attempt, the Marian apparitions, and the Fatima prophecies, but I don't know the papal history well enough. Miracles are really not too effective out of immediate presence -- no one believes. Even those that witness them directly can convince themselves they didn't see what they just saw. But it's a requirement for Sainthood, nu?

Did Amanpour just say John Paull II was the first "non-Cathlic" elected Pope?

She did, and she didn't realize her error either. She meant to say non-Italian, as the rest of her otherwise reasonable description referred.

Very perfectly said. It was his essence. Thanks!

He will forever be known for standing, when most thought he would be nothing more than a figurehead. A lousy position to be in, giving the situation the church had put itself into over abuse scandals.

All your prayers belong to us. RIP

You're normally not supposed to start the process before five years after death, although they rushed it a bit for Mother Teresa...

My wife says there is a picture of Pope John Paul II with Mother Theresa "out there".

Does anybody know of such a picture and where I could find it?

I love the picture of the Pope and President Reagan walking
