That is not a teenage mutant turtle - it isn't even green.

I agree with your assessment that it looks overpolished. Perhaps it was finished by students after his death (something true of other works by him, especially figures to the side in one of the later pietas).

It also lacks the incredible tension and twisting in his work. Seems to me that if it was a real self-portrait, that torso would be twisted even more than it is already. Perhaps it is a Pierino da Vinci instead.

It must be by other hands than his. Vasari - from personal knowledge - records that Michelangelo "was an exceedingly modest man". Why then would he be doing a melodramatized formal self-portrait? Besides, his low opinion of his own appearance is well known and recorded, and per that same Vasari, he limited his formal portraiture only to individuals of exceptional beauty. And BTW, in this relief he is given much bigger hair than he is depicted with in his other portraits.
So, if the work is truly his, the price tag would be two feet long, but as it stands now, I'd say an inch and a half at most.

Yeah, actually, that looks a LOT like his earlier self portraits (note the broken-looking nose). For once, I find myself in agreement with one of these contemporary "discoveries."
