"Gay groups say they have been demonised by a Republican administration beholden to a powerful evangelical wing that believes homosexuality is a sin."

Examples of demonization? Echo? If I pulled this in college, my Lit prof would have given me an F.

... same-sex marriage ballots were held in 11 states during last November's election. All voted against them.

Boy, those conservatives certainly have a lot of power, even in liberal California. Amazing.

Wouldn't they be better off just moving to Seattle?

You're absolutely right. Folks figure since it's not Seattle, it must be conservative! Yeah, sure....just like those "conservative" San Juan islands.....

"But they admit that being openly gay in many parts of America is an exercise in fear. 'We live in fear every day. That is part of being gay right now,' said Reguindin."

You, Mr. (or Ms.)Reguindin, are a liar. People who live in fear don't have articles quoting them published. Nothing but a fear-mongering liar.

Homosexuality is a mental disorder.

"'One day I hope that our youth don't have to come here in secret through the back door,' said Laurel Kelly, Odyssey's executive director."

Not much secret about them and their back doors nowdays...
They practically preach about their back doors on street corners...

The subjects of the article are mixed-up kids with a pathology that even they don't understand. Someone should tell them that the feelings they're struggling with might go away if they let it. It's sad that they feel they can't trust their parents, but they deserve to know that there is help out there. But the gay activists just want to take advantage of them.

That's what I was thinking. THIS is the heartland of "red America"?--I don't think so. The author is taking some artistic liberties here.

I also don't get the story. These folks complain about feeling isolated---so they want to create a "gay business district" to segregate themselves??

Many gay teens wish to leave Spokane for big cities like Seattle, San Francisco or New York with long-established gay areas.

If they want to live in an area that accepts their sodomite death-style, then they should. Why corrupt Spokane?

As the US religious right mobilises, gay activists plan a freedom zone in its heartland.

Heh. They did that with those two cities on the Dead Sea once.

Worked great.

Some conservative groups, such as Focus on the Family, meet weekly to plan strategy to fight a 'homosexual agenda'.
The writer spends a couple of hundred words talking about a homosexual agenda, and then puts "homosexual agenda" in quotes.

Yeesh.

It seems to me that if gays were to get off this "I'M GAY AND IN YOUR FACE AND YOU MUST ACCEPT ME." kick, most folks would ignore them and leave them alone.

Try this, "I'M A GUN OWNER AND I'M IN YOUR FACE AND YOU MUST ACCEPT ME."

Waco holocaust. Babies burnt alive.

If anyone is being demonized, it's Christians.

"And since when is Spokane the "heartland"?"

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It's "redder than red" per this author.

It's this IN YER FACE crap that is hurting their movement more than anything else.

I personally could care less if someone is gay. That's between them and God. I don't care what they do in their own home as long as it is between consenting adults. I don't care what crap they show on TV. I have a clicker and I use it. I don't even care if private money pays for domestic benefits. That's a business decision. I don't support gay bashing either.

However, I draw the line when they push their agenda in schools, push for tax money to pay for domestic benefits, push for sanctioned marriage privleges(And the tax money to go with it), and when they act like drama queens.

What they do is none of my business, I don't want it pushed in my business.
