Actually, I am most disturbed that the author is employing the current use of the word "gender" when the appropriate word is "sex." There are but two sexes: male and female. "Gender" should be reserved for language use (e.g. French, where La is feminine gender, Le is masculine gender)

As H.W. Fowler wrote in his "Modern English Usage":

"gender...is a grammatical term only. To talk of persons...of the masculine or feminine g[ender], meaning of the male or female sex, is either a jocularity (permissible or not according to context) or a blunder."

Even the Microsoft dictionary admits that other uses are non-standard.

Lewis Carrol was a mathematician and had quantum wormholes in mind in 'Alice Through the Looking Glass.'

snip.....is curiouser a word?

No. But in Mad Hatter Ville, where 'is' has multiple meanings, 'curiouser' can also be a valid word.

He also had in mind the devastating effects of widespread moral insanity.

"...'curiouser' can also be a valid word."

And, it can mean just what you choose it to mean - neither more nor less.

What edition would that have been? See sex and gender

OTOH, see Humpty Dumpty. "When I use a word, it means exactly what I want it to mean—nothing more and nothing less."

Multiculturalism is a neo-Marxist theory, and it's the engine driving our social order to ruin. And it's from multiculturalism that political correctness and the insanity producing notion of 'orientation' arose. Multiculturalism has the disasterous consequence of dividing and categorizing mankind into classes by 'orientation', gender, economic status, religious belief, and ethnicity. Each of these classes are then locked in constant warfare over rights.

Bingo. We have a winner.

At this moment, Republicans have the power to pull the plug on this engine of destruction.

DEFUND THE LEFT!!

I'd dearly love to see that happen. But it would entail the divestiture of status and power from 'special rights' groups. And I can't see that happening without a lot of ugliness. And with regards to homosexuals, they would need to accept that they aren't 'oriented beings' but simply males and females who have a same-sex attraction disorder.

We need a massive re-education effort, imo.

Both the first and second editions. The third edition is a complete rewrite of the entire book, and is not Fowler's work at all.
