"We all applaud the Iraqi people for their elections, but Americans want to know if all that death and destruction was necessary to bring about elections or if there could have been free elections - as the Palestinians had - without such costs?'' asked Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y.

Well, Charlie, maybe in your perfect little ivory-tower world, freedom just happens, you know, like the coming of spring every year.

But in the real world that the grown-ups live in, liberty has a tendency to come at a cost. Go read the history of our own country, Charlie. Many lives have been lost gaining and protecting the freedom of the United States.

Iraq isn't much different.

I wonder if the North Koreans will have free election or will there be blood in the streets? Tyrants rarely allow free elections out fear for their own lives. There might come a time when a frenzied mob of skinny, long haired North Koreans lay hands on their beloved leader and render him into dog food.

I'm now convinced that Rangel drank too much of the water while still on his home planet, Mars.

I wonder if Rangel thinks that ending slavery was worth all the death and destruction of the CIvil War?

Hopefully Rangel knows all the death and destruction of the CIvil War had nothing to with ending slavery. Commerce and taxes was what it was all about.
