Concealed carry is difficult to maintain. Some people are too skinny to actually conceal a weapon, some people just like big guns, and some, like me, sweat heavily, and would damage anything not resistant to saltwater. I suppose that better would be a mix of concealed and open carry for everyone. As for hypervigilance, everyone should be anyway, all the time. As for open carry being problematic, so is not carrying at all. I have much prefered the places and times where I could carry openly for several reasons; among them that no one would consider it safe to mess with me or mine. I've never had to fire a gun in anger, and that includes my entire military career, as well. Things could have been very different. The one time I was likely to NEED to be armed, in a war zone, our command structure had decided not to allow it. We were left to secure our equipment and persons with sledge hammers, axes, and pry bars; fortunately, it turned out to be one of the Saudi guards freaking out and shooting at shadows on the opposite side of the compound, but...
