It's like debating vegeterianism with cannibals. Oh, well...

You oughta send this thread to the author of the piece to show 'im the superiority of the philistinism over the elitist high culture. That'll learn 'im! (And he could compose a whole another piece out of the highly learned quotes here.)

The author of this piece sounds like an elitist ass. He is grave dancing whilst trying to convey his cultural superiority.

With respect to my Trans-Siberian Orchestra reference, you might find this review of their Christmas rock opera interesting. Yes, that's right -- mainstream heavy metal musicians performing a fairly religious Christmas rock opera, Christmas music, and heavy metal treatments of classical music including Pacabel, Bethoven, and O, Fortuna from the Carmina Burana.

A classic example of cultural collectivism at its worst.

I wonder if this nutbar ever read an unsanitized biography of Tchiakovsky.

You listen to your Pat Boone, I'll listen to my Pantera. If you think that that makes me a bad conservative, then you and this jackhole can cram it with walnuts.

You cannot compare these two music greats. Dimebag Darrell and Bach were totally different music figures. I don't see how you think an appreciation for this man wouldn't be good because I have a great appreciation for him I think he is a talented man and he should of not died in such a tragic way. Being shot on stage doing the thing he loved by some schizophrenic freak is not right. You must not have one bit of compassion in your body because even if I hated DIMEBAG i would still feel sorry for him and show some sorrow because of the way he died. Imagine how his brother must feel seeing his extremely close brother and friend being shot to death right before his eyes. Bach and Dimebag totally different men totally different styles of music. I have an appreciation for both. I enjoy classical music because it's beautifully written music. I also enjoy bands like Pantera and Damageplan. I have a great respect for anyone that can even play an instrument and gets on stage and makes their dreams come true and wake up alive everyday and does something they love with their heart and soul. Bach may inspire some people and Dimebag may influence people to pick up a guitar and want to play and make wonderful music. Music is your own expression the style you make it is your own choice. I hope everyone out there WHO APPRECIATES MUSIC GREATS AND WHO KNOWS WHAT THIER TALKING ABOUT READS THIS. Don't judge someone because I've heard the man was a very kind loving person who just loved playing guitar and loved making his fans happy. To the person who wrote this I hope maybe you opinion will change and maybe you will have some compassion in your heart for another human being and don't be so black hearted.

Grim's column is as offensive as it is childish. As in everything else he writes, Grim tries to portray himself as an elitist, but comes across as a hamhanded vulgarian, celebrating the violent death of a young musician by demonizing his audience. Grim's observations about popular cultural betray a profound ignorance of both people and cultural, and end up being merely nasty and brutish (but, unfortunately, not short). Indeed, if he knew anything at all about popular culture, he would not never have written, let alone tried to publicize, the lame screenplays he flogs on his website.

I wish to reply to your unbelievable comments regarding the death of Darrell Abbott. First of all, as a human being, what right do you have to say “good riddance” about the death of a person who had done nothing bad or hurtful towards you? I am a music student, and I have studied music for the past 14 years. I have background in both classical and popular music, I was in the choir at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle for six years and for three years at Eton College, where I was a music scholar. I have studied the piano, violin, viola and classical guitar to very high levels in the classical world, playing in various orchestras and performed all around the world, including two tours of the USA. I also play the drums, bass and electric guitar and I play many different styles of music from pop to metal. I know what I am talking about in terms of music.
I think what you fail to understand is that classical music, and by classical I mean composers such as JS Bach, is not the only form of music in existence that is well written, innovative and influential. I agree that there is a lot of rubbish popular music flying around, but this has always been the case throughout history, we just forget about them for obvious reasons. Bach was not the only composer of his time, there were hundreds, probably thousands of others, but they do not get remembered, because generally they were not very good. Bach is good, very good. Dimebag Darrell was also very good at what he did. He was a virtuoso performer and had studied his instrument and his craft for many years, he was constantly, as all good musicians are, trying to perfect his art. He is one of the most influential guitarists of our age, his writing and playing style influenced basically every popular metal band for the past five or six years.
I think that by saying good riddance and that children should be taught that Bach is superior to Darrell is preposterous, I think your own education is flawed and that you should learn to accept cultures and styles of music that you are not familiar with. I have spent my whole life in search of different types of music, and I have studied everything that I have come across. I do not like all of it at all, but I know what I do like and why I like it.
I am interested to hear what you have to say to my points and I would appreciate a reply by email.

“If a person has gone through 12 or 13 years of education and has not developed an appreciation for the greatest artistic achievements of mankind, that education has been an utter failure.”

Well i guess being raised on Metal of all kinds and a Pantera fan since i was 5 and now having only a month or so left of High school left I'm a failure

I'm sure that Mr. Grimm would have much preferred the company of Dr. Joseph Mengele and Al Capone to that of Dimebag Darryl. Both are said to have loved classical music and opera.

This article has to be one of the most hateful things I have ever read. You may not have liked Dimebag or agreed with what Pantera said in their songs but at least have the common decency to show respect the dead.
