Plausible since it might be the loudest sub in the world...
Remember when a Chinese pilot harrassing an American Navy plane over international waters ran into it and forced it to land? Apparently, the Chinese feel that it's OK to down American planes over international waters on the grounds that they are spying. I wonder how they'd feel about us sinking their spying subs?
Yes. Let's give 'em a taste of their own medicine, and see what wusses they really are.
We can slap them back anytime we want, it is just a matter of willpower.
Now their new Type 093 SSN and Type 094 SSBN are a little better...but nothing close to our capabilities and they are not even launched yet.
The more serious threat IMHO, is their ex-Soviet Kilo's and their new Yaun class diesel/electric which may surpass the capabilities of the Kilo. BUt those are closer in to shore threats...more defensive in nature. Would be good for a Taiwan operation though.

The new PLAN Yuan Class
In addition, the Chinese are embarked on a massive naval program across the board, see The Rising Sea Dragon in Asia
They don't need to attack with submarines. They are conquoring America with the Dollar.
They bought the IBM PC business yesterday. US goverment PC's made by the commies ?
Next time the accidentally stray into Japan, maybe Japan can accidentally drop a depth charge on them.
Wouldn't it be fun to see a disabled ChiComm sub towed into a Japanese port...
Very likely the Chinese expected to be tracked every step of the way. Wonder what they learned from the Japanese and American response?
Chinese military plans include a major push for a "blue" sea navy to counter the US.
The Japanese will become key players in this drama. I'm glad to see that they are stepping up to the plate and are being aggressive in tracking and shadowing these intrusions.
Need to push Tokyo to become even more engaged.
My guess is that they have, and may have even been using some of the new stuff, installed on the old vessel, to check it out.
I bet we didn't open our fu;; capabilities up to them either. Stroke and counter stroke.
What, I thought we were all friends together now since we've disowned millions of Americans of their jobs and given them to the chinese, mexicans and indians...
Who's to complain if their sub suddenly disappears... in international waters?
Jeff, hope you know that the 8 new Kilos that are being built for the Chinese by Russia carry the Klub supersonic anti-ship/land attack missiles-from what Ive read those things are darn difficult to shoot down (theoritically speaking). There is every chance that the new Kilos could have an AIP module, allowing submerged operations for over 10 days(the average Kilo can go barely 2 days). That would make it a real threat against US facilities in Japan, though it's accuracy probably doesn't come near a Tomahawk. The only nation which uses the Klub now is India, which has around 5-6 subs & 3 guided missile frigates equipped with it.
The Yuans appear to be some sort of license built variant of the Kilo & it sure looks very similar.
"other means"see below
USN VIRGINIA CLASS ATTACK SUB
Hmm,the SDF here refers to the Japanese maritime self defense force(that's right ,the second best navy in the world is not known as a navy!!).They only operate D/E subs, which are pretty excellent, though.
The USN may have lent a helping hand, given the huge number of assets in the region, but I don't think the Virginia was among them-it's only recently been commisioned & is probably still being put through it's paces.Besides,an LA class boat is more than adequate to track a noisy Han class boat.
It also might be a decoy. Maybe there are two loud ones doing noisy stuff, and one really quiet one sneaking off the coast of Honolulu...
We should make such aircraft capable of landing at sea.
