By no means is the President's plan perfect. But faced with the difficult alternatives as we now are it appears to me that it is the best we can do.

No it isn't. It would be better to do nothing than do what Bush/Rove is proposing here. Legal status makes things much worse. Far better to leave them illegal --- then when they cause problems they can be deported.

Most of these illegals come here and leave their family back in Mexico where the cost of raising and providing for a family is much cheaper.

Until they learn about the overly generous government housing subsidies, free breakfasts and lunch at the free schools, free health care, free baby sitting services at Head Start, food stamps, WIC and all the rest. Then they realize that by bringing the family here, the low wages with no health insurance benefits will go much further here than supporting the familiy in Mexico. Then they want amnesty and legal status to make it easy to get all that and bring in their extended families.

If they spend dollars in Mexico, US export demand goes up, which means prices in the US go up.

Mexico has discovered China --- lots cheaper than importing from the USA.

It doesn't matter whether the money goes to Mexico or the US when there's free trade between the two.

You make the false assumption that they only buy from us --- which is incorrect. The money sent by Mexicans working here filters up to the elite class which then vacations in Europe or somewhere else --- the money doesn't come back. The Mexican market places now import junk from China. Not long ago Mexico had a trade deficit with us --- but now we have a large and growing trade deficit with them.

Think about it. Who would roof your house?

You aren't really trying to claim that the houses where there are no Mexicans don't have roofs on them? That's ridiculous. American homes had roofs on them long before this massive immigration got underway. The massive immigration coincides more closely with the Great Society government give-away programs than it does with our homes having roofs.

I am just wondering what the true reasoning as to why our government is not willing to just stop them at the borders.

Likely the real reason is that the minute massive immigration is slowed down in any way, revolution breaks out in Mexico and the corrupt elites are driven into European exile. Our government doesn't want that government --- corrupt and rotten as it is --- to fail or be run out of power, because as rotten as it is --- it's some form of stability.

Something I would like to see tied to any program is the requirement that even the "guest workers" take English classes, have a short course in American history, etc. I haven't seen anything like this mentioned anywhere, and I think it's crucial.

The other crucial issue which we never seem to hear anything from Bush about --- is who is going to pay for their health care --- for the guest workers and who pays the health care and education costs of the large families they might like to bring over? Bush knows who will be providing them medical care --- which is why he won't bring it up. They will all be on the government plan --- which means the taxpayers will pay ---- and the cost of this is already beyond ridiculous.

If they use the dollars to buy stuff from China or Europe, they have to exchange the dollars into Yuan or Euros. That puts downward preassure on the dollar in the FX markets, which ultimatley results in inflation here.

The only way newly printed money going to Mexico wouldn't cause inflation here would be if Mexico's economy were totally closed and they were using dollars as a subsitute for Pesos. Of course, Mexico's economy is no closed.

Well --- I know the giant give-away to Mexico is one way to keep inflation down --- imagine if all those billions leaving --- to the drug cartels and to prop up nonworking families in Mexico --- instead stayed in the USA? It's like the billions of federal handouts going to the areas of high immigration to prop up the schools and hospitals and free medical clinics. The money is pouring from affluent areas of the USA into the poverty-stricken areas and then out to Mexico --- where they just kind of lose their value due to high inflation and lack of incentive to invest and build up anything.

I understand your viewpoint. The government has to do something though. You can't shoot 'em.

We don't have any aliens that we see working in McD's, etc. up here in WASP country. There are always signs asking for help and even those who do pay a fair wage can't get some of these kids to lift a finger. The old Ames store, which went out of business, couldn't get people to work when they needed them, and those were the ones working there! We've lost a lot of work ethic in this country because the kids get everything they want or need from parents. Make them work for their luxury items.

Seems to me that some of these stupid laws need to be changed. Some of our businesses go under because of the mandates they have to follow. It's a heavy burden, especially here in NY.

No, we don't need more immigrants but they're a comin' anyway. Either stop them or document them. We can't keep going on this way.

Now if you and I were in charge, we'd whuppem, but we aren't unfortunately. Mexico needs to do its share but will it? I'm not a defeatist but a realist. I wish we were more like the Israelis and do what we have to do to keep our country safe. Of course, we are a tad larger than Israel so it's a bit easier for them to accomplish that.

LOL, they used to say that just about everywhere!

New York is infested with illegal aliens. You must be a shut in.

We've lost a lot of work ethic in this country because the kids get everything they want or need from parents. Make them work for their luxury items.

Horse crap. We've lost about everthing in this country and it starts at the greedy businesses that are willing to hire illegal aliens that will work for 6 bucks an hour, while counting their greedy profits on the backs of the tax payers. Work ethic my butt! We've lost a hell of a lot more than that.

Who are you kidding with this bull sh*t? You see a young adult with a new SUV and you think they own it? Hello, they are paying 300 a month for that vehicle, while making 8 bucks an hour. They usually figure out they can't afford it and they are sold within a year. No one owns these new cars.

A young adult can not afford to even buy a home. How many young adults you know are able to buy $500,000 home? (That's just the average price in the west). How many young people you know could even afford a cheap home for 375k? What are all these luxury items you speak of? If you could be specific. Most young people in my area are driving around in beat up ol pickup trucks. Most young people I know can not even afford to move out of the home because it cost 900 dollar a month, just for rent. NOTHING ELSE! Just rent.

I'm speaking mostly about TEENAGERS, still living at home, Joe. Get a grip. Good jobs have left NY State. I know that and it really ticks me off. Taxes have destroyed businesses and the fact that people want to buy cheap Chinese and other imported stuff is another. Where I live, in a more rural area of New York, we don't see many aliens. I'm not a shut in yet! M

I have a fine grip missy, trust me.

You failed to answer the question. What are all these luxury items being showerd on these young people?

When you compare what American teens have against what most of the world's people have, they do just fine. They have good clothes, usually a decent car to drive, they get an education and some get it practically free, parents give kids what they didn't have growing up and a lot of them don't have a great work ethic. I know there are many exceptions, especially from parents who realize that handing money and goodies over to their children is not in their best interests.
