It must have depended on where you were in the US. I traveled from Ft Sill to Houston and San Antonio, in uniform, 2 or 3 times a month all of 1971, and from Houston to Germany, round trip, 3 times in 72 and 73 and never had any trouble at all. Well unless you count two Southwest Airlines stewardesses (the hotpants days at Southwest) getting pissed that I could not join them for dinner in San Antonio.</

This author is like the Germans who deny that the Holocaust actually occurred.

The best approach to counter this sort of propaganda is gather up all the anecdotal evidence, the photographs, the memorabilia, the diaries...&etc...and establish some sort of Museum...a central collection of Vietnam Vets in a single Spitoon-o-rama...

Make movies...like 'Colonel Schindler's List' about some person who protected returning Vets--in any way--from the onslaught of Liberal vile...

Make documentaries...like 'Sgt. Frank's Diary'...

I remember...March 1971...the Oakland, CA Induction Center...the whistling to the tune of...

You can get anything you want...
at Alice's Restaurant...
Exceptin' Alice...

The military who worked there each day came to work in 'civies', changing into uniforms only after they were safe inside the building. Oh, how I bet they wished those stories weren't Out There.

But they are...

Keep reminding them. Don't let them forget...

Even after they're gone...and all that remains is the putrid aroma of self-righteous, Liberal-Fascist scum...

However, most accounts of spitting emerged in the mid-1980s only after a newspaper columnist asked his readers who were Vietnam vets if they had been spit upon after the war (an odd and leading question to ask a decade after the war's end). The framing of the question seemed to beg for an affirmative answer.

WHAT A LOAD i was born in 1960 i was hearing of our men being spit on from my father who wanted to kick hippie ass over it in 1967 when i was 7 it was the first time i ever seen my dad get realy mad so i know this guy is full of bovine excrament !!!

I believe this... just like I believe John Kerry was a war hero or that oral sex isn't sex.

I was in college towards the end of the Viet Nam war. I strongly remember meeting returning soldiers at parties on campus where no one would talk to them. So I did. They were still haunted by what they had been through over there but they were filled with hope as they attended college courses and tried to build a new life for themselves.

After a few months, some of them just couldn't take the ostracism and ended up in institutions. How do I know? I continued to be friends and wrote to them in those institutions! And they wrote to me. I swore that they would not be mistreated around me.

As I saw the Kerry campaign go down exactly the same pathway now toward the Iraq war, I was furious. They all said they supported the troops but they didn't. Talk is cheap. Instead of suffering with our boys, they complained that they were the ones under attack for their lack of patriotism.

I worked for President Bush to be re-elected because our current soldiers do not deserve the treatment they got after Viet Nam. I am so grateful that the Swiftboat Vets gave us their memories. And fought the battles again. This country was truly damaged by the violence those 'peace' protestors perpetrated on our soldiers. I saw it. This author is a liar.

This is an outright lie. If you believe it, I've got a really nice bridge for sale in Fallujah, Iraq.

These actions were contrived by the antiwar protesters. Normally they hung around airports and bus stations in groups of 15-20. The objective was to provoke the vets. to violence or retaliation and prove we were criminal. There was always a liberal reporter to report any misdeeds by Vets in the vicinity. Soldiers were also under orders not to respond or they would be court marshaled. When I went on leave our routes had to be approved. You could not even go through a collage town unless you lived there and you had to travel in civvies unless it was a station change. And yes there were newscasts of this, and Kerry's testimony, protest rallies, Fonda and Kerry, pictures of celbs in Nam. and protesters confronting Vets. Somehow over the last thirty years these things have been sanitized just like Kerry's book. Try to find a copy. The one thing that couldn't be sanitized is us but there was success in brainwashing you. You seek to prove your point with evidence from other liberals to no avail. You refuse the truth you have just witnessed. A traitor and leader of one of these groups has just been defeated on this very issue. Do you really think the American people would have stood by and let this self proclaimed hero go down in flames if he was legit. Americans love their heroes and stick by them. Kerry did not pass the test because of the activity he incited and condoned. Nothing, not Bush, not any party could have brought all the Swiftboat Vets. and Vets together to defeat Kerry except that we remember the spitting, the protesters and the lies. It is you who lie unknowing or not, destroy the evidence, and twist the truth. Vets fought for this country so that you, yes even you have the right to spew your lies and hate. A religious person might forgive you but I am not religious and I and other Vets. will never compromise. I now see the hate rising that I experience then and it is being pushed by people like you. I am 63 and one day when my son returnes from Iraq I will be at the airport to meet him as a father and a civilian. In the event of vile protests from the left no quarter will be ask and none will be given. Screaming Eagle

Liar llewellyn. I wasn't spat upon, I was spat at. Police separated us. Had I been spat upon there would have been a dead hippie. Even so, these hippie scum made my last wearing of my uniform a sad experience.

They warned us about the 'protesters' at El Toro, and advised us against wearing the uniform. Heck with that, I wanted to show it off, the whole E-Ticket ride. What should have been joyous was depressing and painful. communist vermin!

I guess the idiots are trying to rewrite history again. My Viet Nam veteran brother was spit on at Los Angeles airpot by those scum sucking "cowardly" a@@holes.
The only urban myth about this article is that the person who wrote it may think he/she has a brain.

Only 3 percent of returning soldiers recounted any unfriendly experiences upon their return.

Even if true, it's three precent too many.

This isn't a spitting story, but I have a friend who was in Vietnam during the war.

He said when his tour of duty was over, he and others were flown to California. When he got off the plane, there was no fanfare, etc. There was one guy waiting there to greet them - Jimmy Stewart. He came out to meet them by himself, on his own.

He said it was probably his fondest memory of that time.

Dear Mr. Llewellyn. You are wrong. Many people who served during that time were treated in a hostile behavior. As a person in your position would have no idea of what happened during that period, many of my fellow servicemen were subjected to harsh treatment. Had I faced these morons, I would have reacted in a negative way.

I know of TWO vets that were spit on as they arrived into SFO enroute to Travis AFB upon returning from Vietnam.

Yes a FREEPing to this author is in order!

"Only 3 percent of returning soldiers recounted any unfriendly experiences upon their return."

Well, partner, that's about 3% too damn many. BTW, 3% of of a half a million is about 15,000. That's way too damn many.

I have studied urban legends for nearly 20 years and have been certified as an expert on the subject in the federal courts. Nonetheless, it dawned on me only recently that the spitting story was a rumor that has grown into an urban legend. I never wanted to believe the story but I was afraid to investigate it for fear that it could be true.

Well, my father didn't get spit on when he stepped off the plane stateside after coming back from Viet Nam. Nope. Instead, he was struck by a bag of piss that burst open upon contact.

But you're right - he wasn't spit on.
