Police say one security guard killed in Buenos Aires

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - An explosion at a branch of Citibank in Buenos Aires on Wednesday killed one security guard, police said.

“There were two artifacts -- just one exploded. The second one must have been detonated by the fire squad,” Police Chief Francisco Santos Miglino told reporters at the scene, adding that the security guard at the bank had died.
An explosion also hit a branch of Argentine bank Banco Galicia in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, but no injuries were immediately reported.

CIUDAD DEL ESTE, Paraguay, 5 May 2003 — Back in 1995, Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden is said to have visited a mosque in the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguacu, a key location on the triple frontier of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, according to Brazilian intelligence sources.But imams and Arab community leaders here say reports of such a visit are false. “No one from here remembers that visit,” said Jalil Omad, a Lebanese-born trader. The mosque’s gold dome and white towers are visible from the bridge that links Brazil with Paraguay, over which thousands of trucks and people flow each day. According to the United States, the traffic feeds contraband, drugs and piracy as well as arms trafficking.The US State Department maintains that sleeper cells of Islamic groups Hezbollah and Hamas have a presence in the region, famous for its dense vegetation and the spectacular Iguazu Falls nearby.Last March, after the third leader of Al-Qaeda, Kuwaiti Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, was captured, authorities found in his personal documents evidence of his presence here, including a 20-day visit in December 1995. The Kuwaiti visited the region with Bin Laden himself, according to the Brazilian magazine Veja, which cited an Egyptian informer of the Brazilian intelligence service.Yet no one seems to remember his visit either at the Foz do Iguacu mosque or in the Arab community in neighboring Ciudad del Este, in Paraguay.“We are a peaceful working community. Bin Laden is a man of violence who’s been asking for it,” said Sheikh Assayed Charis Sayed, the imam of the Prophet Muhammad Mosque, set in the commercial center of this city of 220,000 inhabitants, located 350 km east of Asuncion. Veja, however, claims that a 28-minute video clearly shows Bin Laden in a meeting with Muslims of Foz do Iguacu.Bin Laden, who is blamed for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, “appears with a discreet goatee, not the full beard” seen in videos in the wake of the attacks.“The only thing it has done is to cause uncertainty,” Mijail Meskin, Syrian consul in Ciudad del Este, said of the report.“Here we have the best intelligence services in the world, including (the Israeli) Mossad, and the CIA, even the Argentine and Brazilian (services). Until now, they have found no concrete proof,” Meskin said.Alarmist press reports have caused a drop in tourism and trade, and caused local Arabs to go elsewhere, he said.Many of the nearly 25,000 Arabs in the region have left for Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Iquique, Chile, or have gone to Salta in northern Argentina “to be able to work in peace,” Meskin said. In the steep commercial street of Ciudad del Este signs in Spanish and Portuguese hang side by side with signs in Arabic and Chinese. Here, too, is the Page gallery where, according to Washington, funds are raised for extremist organizations — in particular for Hezbollah.The State Department says the owner of Page gallery, Assad Barakat, raised tens of millions of dollars over the past 10 years to finance terrorist activities. He was arrested in Brazil last June. In Argentina, justice officials are investigating the relationship between Barakat and the July 1994 attack against the Israeli-Argentine Mutual Association, which killed 85 and injured 300, and the March 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy, which left 29 dead.

Just sat in traffic this morning on my way to a client visit in King of Prussia. I called the secretary to let them know that I was running late. We had just this same discussion. The weather is clear and sunny, no ice/snow/rain etc. and yet every major highway in Phila./NJ area had major accidents and backups. The only other factor that could be happening to cause this is the number of deer & car accidents this time of year. Stay safe.

So theres a reference to "Black Friday"? That doesnt sound good but i am getting honestly sick of idle threats here and there. Remember when someone here mentioned how the threats would take it's wear and tear on the people and officials, and we woldn't be taking much seriously anymore. I believe i'm in that mode now.

Updated info. regarding NH missing fuel truck - including License Number

Police Search For Missing Oil Truck - Company Offers Reward For Information

EPPING, N.H. -- Police are looking for a missing oil delivery truck.Investigators believe the bright yellow Buxton Oil truck, carrying 3,000 gallons of home heating oil, was taken sometime on Friday.

Buxton said the company is offering a $3,000 to $5,000 reward for anyone who has information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.

The company said the truck and the oil inside it are worth about $115,000. The truck has the license plate AE7537 and the number 32 on it. It takes about nine months to order a new truck.

Buxton said she also is worried the tanker might be used for terrorism. Buxton said she and other fuel oil dealers received a letter from the government after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks warning that terrorists were looking to steal fuel trucks.

Thanks for the reminder of the 2002 SotUnion speech. The upcoming SotUnion should be interesting.

I hope the President, and his "new" administration feel that preemptive measures against such regimes as North Korea and Iran are the prudent thing to do and follow through. I know a lot of folks don't like the idea of pre-emptive, but, I honestly believe that diplomacy will not work. Every drop of diplomacy has been rung out of the effort.

The unacceptable behavior of N.K. and Iran has been long standing, way before our current administration. And yes, as you've said before, the potential for more deaths is quite true with these two rogue nations as they have developed the means for mass destruction. But, what choice do we have? Their leaders are not rational individuals. I know I sound quite hawkish but I believe we are up against the wall on this, with no other viable option.

From the 2002 State of the Union portion you posted: "We'll be deliberate, yet time is not on our side. I will not wait on events, while dangers gather. I will not stand by, as peril draws closer and closer. The United States of America will not permit the world's most dangerous regimes to threaten us with the world's most destructive weapons."

We need to hold true to this statement. Two years have passed and I'm afraid that passage of time has only emboldened the likes of Iran and N.K. I truly believe the danger is gathering. The next 2-4 years are going to be mighty interesting.
