> What if my local paper supports Bush?

Then find one that supports Kerry, and express your opinion. They won't know whether you're a subscriber or not.

Sorry. No can do.

Canceled the commies back in 92 when they endorsed that jackass from Arkansas. Never resubscribed. Don't buy it at the newsstand anymore either.

My question is: why are FReepers still subscribing to the damn things in the first place?

My paper, the Portland "Oregonian", endorsed Bush in 2000, but flip-flopped this year and endorsed Kerry (the owner, Fred Stickel, wanted to endorse Bush again, and could have overruled his editors, but decided not to.) It's a liberal rag, a liberal town. They were probably afraid they'd face massive cancellations and protests if they endorsed Bush again.

It doesn't matter; I cancelled about a year ago, when they decided to run almost nothing but Bush-bashing letters to the editor. It got tiresome.

If Freepers cancel their subscriptions to any newspaper that back Kerry and send their monthly savings to Free Republic. That is a triple whammy against the fish wrap.

1. They lose subscribers and subscriber $'s.
2. This will negatgively impact their ad $'s
3. They will know that their worse enemy, Free Republic will be receiving each month what used to be their monthly payment.
4. Send copies of your cancellation letter to key/big time local advertisers.

Send the newspaper editor a letter before the election of your intent. If they back Kerry, then follow through. Cancel your subscription and make a monthly donation to Free Republic = to your monthly fishwrap subscription cost.

Amen. It's time we stop financing our enemies. It's like France selling weapons to Iraq. We are paying for the gallons of ink and rolls of papaer that are used to denigrate our positions, candidates and ideology. Why pay someone to punch you in the face when they will do it for free?

You just echoed the comments of my Grandfather who warned his neighbors, friends and enemies in America before WWII not to finance the Germans and Japanese. They laughed at him until Pearl Harbor.

Your excellent summary re never financing our enemies:

Excellent post, Grampa Dave.

Our local paper so far has not endorsed anyone but, if they ever endorsed Kerry, we'd drop them in an instant and give them the reason why.

We live in a Republican county, so I don't expect that to happen, but one must remain vigilant.

"What if my local paper supports Bush?"
"Then by God, keep that paper because you have a good one! :)"

Most rags don't actually support any conservative. Case in point...when I was living in NW Indiana during the 1992 campaign, the Post Tribune had an obvious bias toward Clinton, based on the headlines, articles and front page pics. However, that same paper endorsed Bush 41 just before the election. This proves that you can't base their political position on whom they endorse. They were just throwing a bone to their conservative subscribers with that endorsement.
