"However, in America they are friendlier -- I count 2 Green/Orange intermarriages in my family tree."
LOL, that is so true. Actually I think the scots/irish in my family are mostly irish folks who went to scotland before coming here. That is on my dad's side, they were here a lot longer than on my mom's side. My mother's dad was a german catholic, from bavaria and my mom's mother was a catholic from Co. Tyrone. Supposedly her father was an emancipated Catholic, but there is some lingering suspicion, because when he died every protestant minister came to his funeral.
Nevertheless, my Irish grandma was quite a radical, very anti-government. She would have loved Free Republic. When I left the girl scouts she shook my hand to congratulate me for "leaving that quasi-military orgainization" and she got thrown out of a movie theatre for shouting out that FDR and Churchill were swine. That was BEFORE we were in WWII. Quite a character my Mary-ama, as we called her.
It was Scotch-Irish up until just recently.
Agreed.
Me dotter's name is Heather. Me son's name is

when the first Mc***** came from Scotland to Northern
Ireland. He was called "Honest George Mc***** of

Andrew Johnson's impeachment was similar to Clinton's in that both were impeached by the House and tried by the Senate. The difference was that there was a real trial in Johnson's case, whereas in 1999 the Senate had decided beforehand what the outcome would be and just went through the motions.
Ditto, cept tempered with a little Pole, Swiss and Fr. Canadian.

Listen ye 'ere, mate, Scotch is somethin fine ye drinks from a bottle. A Scot is someone from Scotland the Brave. And an Irish is one o' them fellowes ye see face down in the gutter from imbibing too much o' that fine Scotch Whiskey.
cool....
French huh?
j/k :)
I think you're wrong. I think Johnson WAS impeached and avoided conviction by one vote. Therefore we now have TWO impeached presidents in our woodpile.
Old Rob Roy MacGregor: One of the Baddest characters in History!
We might be related! LOL. My Huguenot ancestors came from Alsace.
apropos...
I've ordered a copy.
Could someone explain to me exactly what Scots-Irish means? I'm mostly Scottish on my father's side, and Irish on my mothers, yet, I get the feeling this isn' the same thing.
And I think it is relatively obvious that the Scottish Enlightment had a profound influence on the principles that formed this nation.
Mine into the northern neck of Virginia about 20 years after yours, then founded Centreville, VA about 100 years later.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you do it? I've been thinking about doing the same thing. I was born a German citizen (not that I have a drop of German blood in me), but didn't have an opportunity to exploit it until long after I lost it by default per German government rules. I've been thinking that Ireland would be a good place to get a second citizenship for similar reasons to what I presume are yours. Being ethnically a whole lotta Irish and Scot (right down to the green eyes), I could certainly look the part.
I know there are a couple methods for becoming an Irish citizen, I'm just wondering which one you found convenient. Freepmail me if you don't want to respond publicly. Thanks!

Same here! My bunch landed in Delaware in early 1600s, IIRC. The story goes that patriarch Jacob _______ took one step out from his front door and got zapped by a lightning bolt!
