But what if the worst-case scenario occurs and North Korea begins selling nuclear weapons to the highest bidder, including terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda? Then we have another Cuban Missile Crisis and the very survival of our nation would be at stake. That scenario would force us to attack and destroy their nuclear facilities. We would have to do it, even if it means a massive first strike with nukes and e-bombs that wipes out all possible missile sites. I hate to say it, but this scenario is quite possible beginning next year. Between Iran and North Korea, the next few years could be extremely tense...similar to October 1962 in slow motion.
Just one more comment. Has anyone else noticed that Dick Cheney and Colin Powell are in a much more serious mood than they were a couple of years ago? I think this is because of Iran and North Korea. Bush seems just a little more serious and Condi Rice is about the same. But what do you think about Cheney and Powell?
N. Korea is pretty well covered. It would be difficult for them to get those few missiles out of the holes, much less up to enough speed for them to get away and force us to rely on systems on this side. But there does remain the chance that one could get through or that China would do something really squirrely. The outlook for that should improve over the coming months as more of the ABM defense is planted.
Yet, we are still reluctant to participate in hurting anyone unless it is absolutely necessary.
BTW, N. Korea has made that same threat before, against Seoul. It's nothing new.
Who says we wouldn't attack an adversary with nukes? We are seriously considering the possibility of doing so with regard to Iran, aren't we?
The Norks do not have the ability to sustain a prolonged war. China would most likely invade them first "For the good of the region" if Dear Leader actually tried anything. Either way, the Norks would lose, and lose badly.
Very very stupid thing to say to the Japanese. My guess is they have just shifted Japans policy greatly. There will be budget changes, the military will get all it wants.
The Japanese are not cowards, but are very honorable men. Cowards are weakened by threats, but Honorable Men get resolve.
Personally, I believe the U.S has all the Intell on them and knows exactly how to deal with them.
Bush has named them all. He would not have mentioned them "by name" If He did not have at least a piece of evidence that they are all inter-connected some how. GWB has been briefed on their capabilities.
Iran is the next issue on the Bush agenda.NK may be exaggerating. BUt I believe Bush want's to help the middle East become stable.
NK we can deal with through the UN. Iran , we have all the equipment and manpower there to fight.
But NK is surrounded. ANd I just fear that KIm Jong may be trigger happy.
So that means they win? Because they will and are going to attack us with nukes. The only way to survive a nuclear war is to build your country so that it is strong and stable, decentralize power, water and phone systems, overbuild hospital services and most importantly build in your people the morals and fortitude to fight when it is the right thing to do, not just the winning scenario.
If your society is hedonistic and self centered, dehorned and gelded for ease in shearing, you are doomed, you have nothing to live for in peace, nonetheless live for in war.

We're holding back on striking North Korea not primarily because of what NK can do to us, but because of what NK and do to South Korea. The Seoul, South Korea metro area is located only 20 miles south of the DMZ. North Korea has thousands of fortified heavy artillery pieces, which can all reach Seoul, dug into the hills just north of the DMZ. NK has the capability to rain down tens of thousands of H&E artillery shells per hour on Seoul and its 10 million residents. This is the main reason we haven't struck NK's nuclear facilities yet. Kim Jong Il is basically an extortionist who holds South Korea hostage with his heavy artillery to prevent the US from removing his regime.
If I remember my history correctly, the inital Allied counter-attack in the Korean War pushed NK forces well over a hundred miles north of Seoul....out of artillery range. But Mao Tse Tung brought China into the war and pushed the allies back to the present DMZ. So China screwed up the Korean Peninsula and is responsible for the current unstable situation there. Ironically, Mao's most talented son was killed in a bomb and napalm attack by Allied planes in the final weeks of the war. (Was that Ted Williams or Jerry Coleman in that plane?)
No, they won't. Not unless we attack them first.
Kim Jong-Il is perfectly happy to be absolute dictator over his own little personal abbatoir.
As long as he is left alone, he won't lob nukes towards Honolulu.
On the other hand, IF we invade North Korea, then he probably will.
We can't invade North Korea. We're not God. There are some things that the USA can't do.

More serious? Probably not, but Dick Cheney's circulation is much better these days thanks to the stents, and there's no doubt Secretary Powell has followed Dick's example and is taking his blood pressure medicine regularly!
North Korea makes these kinds of specific threats about once every year or two, and makes more minor threats on a daily basis. Actually, most of it is just boiler plate language used in past press statements and speeches.
It gets old after awhile.

We can always shoot the missile down at stage 1. Maybe then drop something near the DMZ when the winds are blowing north.
I want to know what President Bush has in store for this imminent threat to our country. Why, this communist redoubt still serves as a reminder that so much things are left undone.

Depends on who the adversary is, how big there arsenal is, etc. And the executive order WAS recinded by Bush.
