Rush is going wild on this now.

CBS is insane. If they think this is enough to stop the floodgates, they're dead wrong.

The part at the end of the Dan Rather Statement, where he resigns from CBS, was the most impressive!!

he deliberately misled the CBS News producer working on the report, giving her a false account of the documents’ origins to protect a promise of confidentiality to the actual source

The DNC, there's little doubt.

If CBS now recognizes the Bush National Guard documents as a forgery, why do they not cooperate in identifying the source of the forgery and the forgerer???

Priest-penitent privilege, physician-patient privilege, attorney-client privilege.....
There actually is no journalist-source privilege.

Now we have a source-subsource privilege being asserted?

Substance aside, I am so tired of having my intelligence insulted.

No apology to our president? No anger at being duped (yeah right) by their source's still unnamed source?

CBS IF FULL OF CBS

"Burkett, a retired National Guard lieutenant colonel, also admits that he deliberately misled the CBS News producer working on the report..."

So, instead of making Rather and Mapes walk the plank, CBS is making Burkett the fall guy.

"'60 Minutes Wednesday' had full confidence in the original report or it would not have aired. However, in the wake of serious and disturbing questions that came up after the broadcast, CBS News has done extensive additional reporting in an effort to confirm the documents’ authenticity...."

This is reporting that it should have done BEFORE it aired the report. Of course, I don't know how they can take credit for breaking the story that the documents were fake. They were the last to figure that out.

"That included an interview featured on last week’s edition of "60 Minutes Wednesday" with Marian Carr Knox, secretary to the late Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, the officer named as the author of the documents; the interview with Bill Burkett to be seen tonight; and a further review of the forensic evidence on both sides of the debate."

Isn't there a football game on tonight? Can't see myself watching "both sides" of this "debate." I've already seen enough, and made up my mind.

"CBS News and CBS management are commissioning an independent review of the process by which the report was prepared and broadcast to help determine what actions need to be taken. The names of the people conducting the review will be announced shortly, and their findings will be made public."

Independent? How much you want to bet?

Or, to protect his own backside ass the creator of the forgeries.

I will be interested to hear (won't watch) whether Burkett admits in his interview that he deliberately misled CBS, as claimed by CBS. My guess is that he won't.

CBS is so full of crap. This wasn't a "mistake", they were not "misled", and they should not be given a pass with this half-assed quasi-apology. This is like the guy who robs a bank with a rubber gun.

CBS committed fraud in an attempt to influence a presidential election within 60 days of that election, nothing less. Everybody involved should be immediately fired and CBS should be accepting full responsibility instead of hiding behind shadowing stories of being "misled" and "making a mistake". Mistake hell, they committed a crime using forged documents!

report on President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard.

Burkett, a retired National Guard lieutenant colonel, also admits that he deliberately misled the CBS News producer working on the report, giving her a false account of the documents’ origins to protect a promise of confidentiality to the actual source.

I am getting real tired of their identifying Burkett as National Guard when it should be ARMY NATIONAL GUARD.

The media is purposely trying to mislead the reader by only saying Air National Guard with Bush's service and National Guard with Burkett's -- they weren't the same.

This is a load of BS.

CBS WAS NOT THE VICTIM...THEY WERE THE PERPETRATOR!
CBS was not misled. They were told that the documents were fakes...BEFORE THEY AIRED THEIR HIT PIECE!

And the fact that BURKETT just up and says he misled CBS....shows that this "misled" crap is just a coordinated effort by CBS and Burkett to cover up for Kerry and the DNC.

Dan Rather's interview with Burkett was nothing more than a meeting so they could get their story straight.

So they're still not admitting the docs are forgeries - Burkett's taking a fall about lying re their provenance. Not good enough.

"Based on what we now know, CBS News cannot prove that the documents are authentic, which is the only acceptable journalistic standard to justify using them in the report."
Andrew Heyward
CBS News President

I would like to see AND hear an apology on the CBS Evening. We'll see if they print this story as much as they rammed the lie. I doubt it.
