This is an exerpt of an article about Burkett back when he was complaining about the "Bush records in the trash can," a story that has since been totally debunked.
In order to have been hospitalized, Burkett must have been certified by physicians as fitting into two categories:
1. Significantly mentallly ill and 2. A danger to himself or others.
A person is not hospitalized for mental illness unless they meet BOTH criteria.
This article was first published in the NY Times on Feb 12, 2004.
Rather's researchers had more than 7 months to check on their story source. They knew or should have known that had been certified as both severely mentally ill and a danger to himself or others.
.... and they still went with the story....

Before finally winning medical benefits in July 1998, he said, he suffered a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized for depression So, for the past 6 years this nutbag has been on the dole, after a career of professional victimhood.
Fraud in one thing, fraud in many things.

Burkett's mental illness will eventually be his (and Rather's) legal defense.

I don't think your title is established by your evidence. A person can check in at such a hospital voluntarily without meeting that standard.

Hmmmmm. The man is hospitalized for a nervous breakdown and depression, so therefore....what? He couldn't possibly be in possession of anything that might have pertinence to the presidental campaign? I have a real problem with that.
As others have said, there are plenty of other reasons to doubt the credibility of the story without flinging stones at someone for needing help with their mental health. This is really beneath us.

I read that he was actually hospitalized twice.
Also, when he told his story to a Boston Globe reporter, sometime in February of this year, he also said that there was another person, named Conn, in the room when Bush's files were being destroyed. The BG reporter also asked Conn, who said that the whole thing never happened. The BG reporter was on Hannity & Colmes a few days ago, and it was also mentioned in some other articles.
So all the news community knew full well that Burkett was a liar and is delusional.

Dan Ratherstupid opened Bush's file drawer and found a forgery to rival the Hitler Diaries. A bigger screwup than Geraldo opening Capone's vault on lie television.
