It's a fake, and everyone knows it.

Including CBS, but they aren't telling.

I'm now ashamed to admit that I've bought, and even once subscribed to this magazine.

Never again.

Remember that it's part of the greater Ziff-Davis empire.

They didn't even bother to use the "Original" memos. They simply took some text from the Selectric's manual and then retyped them in MS Word. This in know way proves that a document created in MS Word with all the quirks that it has and has been stated before can be done on the Selectric, they can't. You can get a similar looking document on the Selectric, but it still won't match. The fact of the matter is that there is no way beyond a printing and typesetting house to produce that memo in the 1970's PERIOD.

I'm so glad PC magazine has chosen to reveal itself as the incompetent fools they are, although I have long suspected this.

peterduncan already settled this before the poor guy posted his article.

He looks like a fool. Furthermore, I opened word & typed "117th" and my "th" in word looked nothing like the PC guru's "th". I'm guessing he tried all the font's till he found one that does not raise the "th" as high.

60 minutes has used fake memos in other stories besides this one.

Washington Times says the memos were forged.

Washingtom Post seems like they are giving Dan a chance to fess up before the avalanche of evidence buries him.

He also forgot to address all these problems:

*Lt Col Killian didn't type;

*Lt Col Killian's family says he did not maintain such records;

*Guard regulations prohibited the maintenance of such records;

*General Bobby Hodges didn't vouch for the docs as CBS said he would;

*Colonel Buck Staudt --cited in the memos as pushing Killian to "sugarcoat" a Bush evaluation-- had retired more than a year before the meo was allegedly written;

*Bloggers have been overwhelmed with e-mails from active duty and retire dmilitary who scoff at the form of the memos;

*Typewriters with proportional spacing were rare in '72/3;

*Typewriters with superscripting capabilites were rare in '72/3;

*Typewriters with perfect centering ability were non-existent '72/3;

*Typewriters with the "kerning" function didn't exist in '72/3;

*Most experts, from Dr.Cartwright at Rice, the above-referenced Dr. Bouffard and Farrell Shiver, range from certain to almost certain in their conclusions that the docs are not legit;

*CBS doesn't have the "originals" and didn't reveal that fact until pressure mounted;

*The fake docs are easily and exactly reproduced on modern word-processing equipment, underscoring the ease with which the bad forgery could have been produced contrasted with the near impossibility of Lt Colonel Killian's producing them in 192/3;

*Lt Col Killian lacked motive to write and maintain such records;

*Despite intense media interest in the president's TANG career that extends back at least four years, someone sat on these docs until seven weeks before the 2004 election and after the RNC convention;

*CBS has a history of obtaining docs damaging to the Bush Adminsitration which in all likelihood came from Democratic partisans;

*CBS won't reveal its source;

*CBS has a history of blowing stories that involved fake documents; and

*Dan Rather has not appeared opposite a serious journalist to answer extended questions on camera, even though his reputation and the reputation of his network are being shredded and a confidant witness would demand a hearing with a Russert or a Hume.

The more that want to jump off the cliff with the Dems, Rather, CBS, the Boston Globe, etc., the merrier I say.

We just have to make sure we don't get hit with any fallin' crap.

But the question is not whether the memo was typed [as he says] or prepared or set [as the manual says] on an IBM "Selectric" Composer, the question is whether it was printed by one.

Let me clarify: The question is not whether the manual was typed [as he says] or prepared or set [as the manual says] on an IBM "Selectric" Composer; rather, the question is whether the manual was printed by an IBM "Selectric" Composer.

There are dozens and dozens of specific reasons why no impact printer could have produced the CBS docs.

Please bring this criminal, corrupt CBS "news" organization to its knees, then help send it into Chapter 11.

I read the PC article. It was nervy to enter the fray with such a poorly researched and misdirected arguement in light of all the work done by experts on the subject. Posters at the site are questioning why this shallow brief is even on the site considering the leading edge tech info PC mag distributes.

The article has been rebuked and refuted quickly.

You should all check out the more than 2 dozen posts to this original PC Mag article. There are at least 2 posters (WAMOORE & TRIMIL) who are just obliterating the author's arguments. Perhaps they're Freepers? Don't know.

I looked at this one, this typewriter wasn't the one that most of the military had. This is the rolls royce one.

I don't believe this typewriter came out till around 76-79

Fortunately, just being a writer for PC Magazine does not make one an expert.

I didn't realize that they survived the dotbomb bust.
It was a pretty good magazine maybe 10 years ago,
but I think they've faded into irrelevancy during the information age.

I think what we have here is a failure to think logically.

Even if the match had been perfect, all it would have done is show that Word can be used to duplicate a document typed on a Selectric.

The alleged relevance of this escapes me.

The question is whether a Selectric, or any other typewriter available in the early 70s, could type the alleged Killian memos. This has nothing to do with what Mr. Mendelson was attempting (and failed) to show.
