In a fresh blow to John Kerry's flagging presidential campaign, the Pentagon has ordered an official investigation into the awards of the Democratic senator's five Vietnam War decorations. They should. His campaign admitted he never went to Cambodia, but even worse is that he didn't earn one of his purple hearts.
He used that purple heart to get out of the military early. He could be charged with AWOL for 35 years!

Not necessarily. I suspect the awards were mostly done by the book. The question is who wrote the action reports, and will an investigation reveal that information.
The first Purple Heart might cause Kerry problems, as will the Silver Star. The others will depend on whether the witnesses are credible, and not Kerry himself.

In an angry statement from the Kerry campaign headquarters, Michael Meehan, Mr Kerry's senior adviser, condemned the navy probe as an expensive waste of the Pentagon's resources. Why would this cause any concern in the Kerry camp, unless they have something to hide? If Kerry's medals are all up and up, you would think they would welcome an examination of the record.

The highly unusual inquiry is to be carried out by the inspector-general's office of the United States navy, for which Sen Kerry served as a Swift Boat captain for four months in 1968, making two tours of duty. Not "unusual", just "infrequent." The implication that this is a "special" measure out of the normal scope of investigations is wrong. The Navy has done this before, and they will do it again, should another person's medals' inconsistencies come to their attention.

Kerry made Vietnam an issue, now lets issue Kerry, his walking papers.

You'd think they'd welcome the investigation to prove the Swift Boat Veterans wrong once and for all. Why the anger? They should be over joyed at this news!

As
Kerry's commanding officer, RADM William Schachte (then Lt.) said, Kerry wasn't underfire for at least one of his purple hearts. For those of us who know men with Purple Hearts earned the hard way, by losing two units of their actual blood and nearly dying, we're very interested in knowing the truth about Kerry's medals.
