Could it be that Kerry wrote the after action report, and ginned it up to "a mother of all battles."
As he became under increasing disapproval from the vets, maybe he realized that others would denounce the after action report, so, he then had an eraser taken to the multiple heroics he displayed throughout that day.
Thus maybe he tried to generalize his actions of the day, so others couldn't rise up and yell "BS!!"
