527's are NOT subject to the 60 day electioneering communications limitation.

Asking a couple of questions:
1) Have the Swift Vets recommended Bush? Or Nader?
2) Have Swift vets done any more than MoveOn.org in trying to create doubt about the other party?

I detest McCain-Feingold. It severely restricts what I consider to be "free speech". Have a hard time with GWB signing it.

Next I hope is a third ad that will address meetings with North Vietnamese officials in the light of his reserve naval officer status. The POW-MIA committee and shredded documents.
Then linkage to businessmen who stood to profit from normalization of relations with N Vietnam. On the Scarborough show, O'Neill had docs on the Sampan incident from Jan/20/69 that showed he had embellished the report. I would not be surprised if they were holding more.

I hadn't thought of your premise....namely that Bush has been raked over the coals by the media already, that they've maxed out on damage they can do to him.

Well...about the old stuff maybe, but the Kerry spinners are still going at him about his Alabama National Guard year. Podesta today threw out the line, " John Kerry was wounded 3 times in combat, and George Bush only has 2 dental fillings to show for his military service" Now granted, that Podesta joke does accidently acknowledge that Bush really was in the Alabama National Guard, but it successfully reminds voters Kerry was in Viet Nam and Bush wasn't.

But areafiftyone, Bush is vulnerable on Iraq. While Bush isn't allowed to use 9-ll to his advantage, Kerry WILL use the war, the casualties, and when he starts talking about the wounded bodies and minds, the lives changed forever, it's going to be rough.

CNN does a segment on Walter Reed wounded on a regular basis. I recently saw a report of a young female soldier, she had her right arm blown off, was undergoing therapy, and she talked to the camera, told how it happened, and she didn't know anything until she woke up at Walter Reed begging them not to cut off her arm. It was already gone. She talked about learning how to put on a bra, shampoo her hair, apply make up with just one arm. Heart wrenching stuff, I tell you.

Exactly--part of CFR is that the 527s can put stuff up
right till the election but I think candidates or parties have restrictions...

I just did a little research on the Net and found that the McCain-Feingold bill features: "A ban on supposedly non-partisan 'issue ads' -- those referring to candidates for federal election without expressly advocating their election or defeat -- in the 60 days leading up to an election".

I think this refers to the ads which used to run saying, "Call or write (candidate) and tell them you
don't support (stand on issue)". Those type of ads are gone due to the bill, I believe, and the bill (well, law) is the reason why we get ads in which the candidate clearly states they put out/paid for/approved the ad.
"I'm George W. Bush and I approved this message."

Political speech is the precise speech the Founding Fathers were protecting when they wrote the First Amendment.

Corporations and unions have the 60 day electioneering communications limitation, not 527's. That's why advertising for F911 would be illegal if they run in the 60's days since they would be placed by a corporation, M. Moore's movie studio. The limitation on corporations does not extend to non-broadcast media.

I'm so angry at the media's handling of this the last several days now that they have been foced to cover the story. Each piece on the SBVFT is a hit piece on Bush.

Last night CNN just outrightly lied: The HEADLINE at the bottom of their screen, "GOP-Funded Swift Boat Ads"

Nice.

"They should burn it into CDs and send them to every home in America. Like those annoying AOL CDs."

That sounds like a good idea. I assume some percent of households do not have CD players, so an enclosed short condensed print version of the documentary could also sent complete with many graphic pictures, sKerry throwing away medals, meeting with communists, etc.

Under federal law, the 527 groups cannot coordinate their ads with the presidential campaigns. But if they use individual donations, rather than labor union or corporate donations, they can run ads praising or attacking a candidate right up until election day.

This HAD to have been a left wing conspiracy to tank Kerry. I cant believe they could have actually even vetted the guy.
And we havent even SCRATCHED THE SURFACE on what he did (not) in the Senate. He has just about gone down the tubes on what he did in 4 months. The rest of his political career has just been a CONTINUATION of what he started in VVAW. I wish they would put out a spot on what he did when he was on the POW/MIA committee. It was posted here on a different thread earlier..and you know that it's a true story when VILLAGE VOICE turns on one of its own.
