you are SO correct -- someone had to be that "voice in the wilderness" -- like Buckley....Goldwater, Reagan, Kemp, etc all rode on his ample coattails...

Goldwater, Reagan, Kemp, etc all rode on his ample coattails... I prefer "built on his foundation." Reagan didn't ride any coattails. He built the house on Buckley's foundation. A house that appealed to almost 60% of American voters during his heydey and perhaps 70% today. Kemp, Rush, Hannity, just simply added a room or addition to the edifice.
