Actually Montgomery lost command of all ground forces in Sept of 44 when Eisenhower moved his headquarters to France and assumed command(Monty was not pleased). Eisenhower was Supreme Commander and as such designated Brits as Commanders of air and ground forces going in.
Thanks for posting.
It was a joint, multi-national coalition operation.
Ouch!...Chiraq is accepting Bush into his space...right now.
IMHO
My contempt for Chiraq is heightened ..now that he just spoke.
It doesn't take much.
I was a young lad of eight when words like "D-Day","Invasion",and "Normandy" were added to my vocabulary.
This day and that place is not about Chiraq or any other
politician. Bless'em all. Bless'em all. The long and the short and the tall.
GERONIMO.!
Amen..I've been watching and listening all day and just tuned into "WW2 music on the internet"...I went to church with my Mother when we heard DDay had begun. Tomorrow they will play what was on the radio on DDay at the time you tune in.
LOL!
Your description is more precise than that in the media, and I appear to be in error as to the relation between Bradley and Montgomery. (I thought Bradley reported directly to Ike.)
Monty was the master of the set piece battle, but couldn't improvise, contrasting with Patton, who could adapt on the move, but did not have much success with the battles for Metz and Nancy.
If you haven't seen this site, you might want to check it out:

I found it looking for info on the occupation..I forgot about it then..Thanks for the link..I'll bookmark it.
I stand corrected. I hadn't realized that Bradley answered to Monty.
FYI, our own FReeper, Euro-American Scum, is jumping with them. I can't wait until he returns to America to give us all a report on his experiences at Normandy! God Bless ALL of our soldiers, past, present, and future!
Ronald Reagan on D-Day:
We will always remember. We will always be proud. We will always be prepared, so we may always be free.
Normandy, France, June 6, 1984
The men of Normandy had faith that what they were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humanity, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this beachhead or the next. It was the deep knowledge -- and pray God we have not lost it -- that there is a profound moral difference between the use of force for liberation and the use of force for conquest.

bump
really???? WOW what a freeper
Yes indeed! He was really looking forward to this trip. Anyone who can jump out of a plane like that has my respect. He will have some great stories to tell when he returns home. He was going to meet a lot of the old Vets from the war, and he was pretty excited about that. He was asked to give a speech to a gathering of all the vets in Normandy.
He's going on to spend a week or so in Israel before coming home, so it's still going to be a while before he returns. I sure hope he takes a lot of pictures to show us.
Cool! I just saw them jump a couple days ago. The C-130s were flying low, that's for sure. They went right over the Saint-Marie-Eglise church after dropping off their guys.
Funny thing is that I met Jimmy Buffet there. An American from Florida was there and recognized him. Nice guy, but he was trying to keep a low profile so I didn't bother him much.
