We've yet to actually handle any of these cases. The 9/11 guys are all dead. None of the head guys have been caught. All we have done with anyone is "detain" them.

So we haven't tried this. All we have done is capture and hold. What we have done doesn't work, and, frankly, doesn't even conform to what we say our country is all about. I accept it as necessary because the detainees are actually prisoners of war. These men are a different class.

Like it or not, these guys are criminals, and if we are serious about what the Founding Fathers said about the nature of man and rights, we need to handle criminals properly. If we just kill them or, as this thread has promoted many times, torture them to death (on tape no less), we are reinforcing the idea that we are no better than they are. If that is the case, we have no right to be outraged when they act like animals.

They need to be punished for their action, which includes execution. But brutal summary executions will have only a short-term impact.

I guess I'm more jaded than you are. You do have a point though. I know they don't really represent this country. But they do represent a portion of it. And that's dissappointing.

I have CNN on (why, I don't know) but they just mentioned they are waiting for the latest military briefing from Baghdad. They will carry it live. I'm guessing that this will relieve them of the decision to report the story or not.
